KINDS OF STANZAS
Couplet = a two line stanza
Triplet (Tercet) = a three line stanza
Quatrain = a four line stanza
Quintet = a five line stanza
Sestet (Sextet) = a six line stanza
Septet = a seven line stanza
Octave = an eight line stanza

The beat created

Rhythm can be
created by using,
meter, rhymes,
alliteration, and
refrain.
METER
A pattern of stressed (strong) and unstressed
(weak) syllables
Each unit or part of the pattern is called a
“foot”
Types of Feet:
• Iambic - unstressed, stressed
• Trochaic - stressed, unstressed
• Anapestic - unstressed, unstressed, stressed
• Dactylic - stressed, unstressed, unstressed
METER
Kinds of Metrical Lines
monometer = one foot on a line
dimeter = two feet on a line
trimeter = three feet on a line
tetrameter = four feet on a line
pentameter = five feet on a line
hexameter = six feet on a line
heptameter = seven feet on a line
octometer = eight feet on a line
RHYMES
Words sound alike because they share
the same ending vowel and consonant
sounds. A word always rhymes with
itself.

EXTENDED METAPHOR
Continues for several lines or possibly the
entire length of a work
LITOTES
Intentional understatement, used for humor or irony
(Example- naming a slow moving person “Speedy”)
PERSONIFICATION
A nonliving thing given human of life-like
qualities

IMAGERY
Language that provides a sensory experience
using sight, sound, smell, touch, taste

IMAGERY
Language that appeals to the senses.
Most images are visual, but they can also
appeal to the senses of sound, touch, taste,
or smell.

ACROSTIC POEMS
The first letter of each line forms a word or
phrase (vertically). An acrostic poem can
describe the subject or even tell a brief story
about it.
Line 1: Subject
Line 2: Two words that describe the subject
Line 3: Three words that describes the action of
the subject
Line 4: Four words that relate feelings about the
subject
Line 5: One synonym of the subject
Example:
Trees
Tall, green
Growing, living, dying
We must protect them
