periods of English Literature

1. The Old English (Anglo-Saxon) period lasted from the invasion of the
English nation by the Germans to the invasion by the French under
William in 1066.

Venerable bede was a Christian theologian and historian in his day.
Bede's most interesting works are history and biography. His book
Eccleastical history is the best work of his day
• Poem
One of the works of poetry in the ancient English period is Beowulf. This
work has 3000 lines and is a type of folk epic.
• 2. The Middle English period lasted from the 12th to
the 15th centuries when Norman-speaking French
conquered England

This period was marked by the literary life of Geoffrey Chaucer (lived
from around 1343 to 25 October 1400). Chaucer is known as a poet and
fiction writer. The masterpiece or best work is THE CANTERBURY TALES. an
example of the use of Mid-Late English in literary works, quoted from THE
CANTERBURY TALES
A Knight there was, and that a worthy man,
That fro the tyme that he first bigan
To riden out, he loved chivalrie,
Trouthe and honour, fredom and curteisie.
• 3. The Rennaissance Period
is also called the early New English period which
focused on the history of language and the
Elizabethan Age (Queen Elizabeth I) or the Jacobean
Age (King James).
There are several characteristics of literary works in the
Renaissance era:

• - Tells stories about INDIVIDUALITY


• - Tells stories about DEATH
• - Tells stories about MORALITY
All these characteristics are closely related to secular
philosophy.
4 .The Eighteenth Century Period
is also known as the neoclassical, golden or
Augustan Age. In this age the classical theory of
literature is adapted to suit contemporary culture.
This era has influenced the distribution of texts
including the development of novels as a new genre and
the introduction of newspapers and literary magazines
such as The Tatler (1709-11) and The Spectator (1711-
14).
• 5. The Romantic Period begins with the first edition
of "The Lyrical Ballads" (1798) by William
Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge where
individuals and nature and emotional experiences
have an important role in their
writing. Romanticism can be seen as a reaction to
enlightenment and political change in Europe and
America in the late 18th century.
6. The period of Realism and Naturalism is also called the
Victorian Age period in England. Realism is often described
as a movement that tries to depict reality in reality through
language.
Examples of the victorian age period
Prose
Novel works produced in the Victorian Period are generally
called "problem novels" (problematic novels). And because it
improves to improve people's morale, these novels are called
"didakdik novels“

• Charles Dickens (1812-1870)
• William Makepeace Thackeray (1816-1833)
• George Eliot (1819-1880)
• Elizabeth Gaskell (1865-1910)

contemporary social life when at that time the drama received
very little attention. His most famous work is "Caste" (1867).
7. The period of American and British Modernism
there are several names of great writers besides Yeats and Conrad, for
example Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) who in some of his work tells about the increased
stress experienced by urban communities in England as told in his novel entitled "New
Grub Street". In addition there is also Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) with the
famous process "The Time Machine". In the field of drama in this crucial new period
New Direction, famous thinker who was involved in the field of drama, Bernard Shaw
(1856-1950) with the famous title of his play is "Pygmalion".
8.The development of literature in the postmodernism
period was related to Nazis and the effects of nuclear
damage during the era of World War II.
