ORTHODONTICS
DEFINITION

Preventive orthodontics is that part of orthodontic practice which is

concerned with the patient’s and parents’ education, supervision of the

growth and development of the dentition and the craniofacial structures

, the diagnostic procedures undertaken to predict the appearance of

malocclusion and the treatment procedures instituted to prevent the

onset of malocclusion
PARENT EDUCATION

• Before birth: Proper nutrition to provie ideal environment for


developing foetus
• Proper nursing
• Breast feeding and bottle feeding
• Maintaining good oral hygiene
• Correct method of brushing the child’s teeth
• Prevention of nursing bottle syndrome
CARIES CONTROL

• Detect Caries as early as possible


• Proximal caries of primary tooth should restored, otherwise
arch length will lose due to movement of adjacent teeth
• Bite wing x ray : For easy detection of proximal caries
EXTRACTION OF SUPERNUMERY
TEETH

• Extraction of supernumery tooth relive crowding and avoid


abnormal eruption of tooth
• Extraction of mesiodens : Diastema closure occur
• Extraction of unerupted supernumery teeth with Cystic
formation
MANAGEMENT OF ANKYLOSED
TOOTH

• Submerged tooth ( Deciduous tooth)


• Woody sound
• Diagnosed and extract it
MAINTENANCE OF TOOTH SHEDDING
TIME TABLE

• Presence of over-retained deciduous teeth roots

• Presence of unresorbed deciduous root fragment

• Supernumery tooth

• Early oral habits should identified and stopped

• Milwaukee brace is an orthopedic appliance used for scliosis


• This appliance exert force on mandible and developing occusion
• And cause deformities
• Use functional appliance or positioners for maintain occlusion
during this treatment
SPACE MAINTENANACE

• Proper space maintance during early shedding ofteeth is important


• Fixed and removable space maintainers
MANAGEMENT OF DEEPLY LOCKED
FIRST PERMENANT MOLAR

• Selective slicing of ( distal bulge) second deciduous molar done for


the eruption of locked 1st permanent molar
MANAGEMENT OF ABNORMAL FRENAL
ATTACHMENT

• Maxillary labial Frenum : Midline diastema


• Blanch test
• Ankyloglossia ( Tongue tie ) : Speech proble m, restrict
growth of maxilla , increase growth of mandible
