SEQUENCE

• is a set of things (usually numbers) that

are in order.
• each number in the sequence is called
a term (or sometimes "element" or
"member")
EXAMPLES

1. 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, . . .
2. 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, . . .
1 1 3
3. , , 1, , 2, . . .
4 2 2
4. 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, . . .
• in an Arithmetic Sequence the
difference between one
term and the next is
constant.
ARITHMETIC • 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, . . .
SEQUENCE • In General we could write an
arithmetic sequence like this:
{a1, a1+d, a1+2d, a1+3d, ... }
where:
•a1 is the first term, and
•d is the difference between the terms
(called the "common difference")
a n = a 1 + (n−1)d
Where:
a1 is the first term
d is the common difference
n is the number of terms
EXAMPLES:
1. Write down the first five terms of the AP with first term 8
and common difference 7.
Ans.: 8, 15, 22, 29, 36

2. Find the 10th term of the A. P.: 2, 4, 6, . . .

Ans.: 20
3. Suppose that an is an arithmetic sequence. Find the values
of a1 and d if a10 = 38 and a15 = 18.
d = -5
a1 = 74
EXAMPLES:
4. Find p so that p + 7, 3p + 9, p + 3, … form an arithmetic
sequence
Ans.: p = -2

5. Starla earned ₱240 in the first week, ₱350 in the

second week and ₱460 in the third week, and so on
in an arithmetic sequence. How much did he earn
in the 7th week?
Ans.: ₱900
• When three numbers a, b and
c are in A. P., then b is called
the arithmetic mean of
numbers a and c. We have
ARITHMETIC b–a=c–b
MEANS (A. M.) or, b =
𝑎+𝑐
2

3, 8, 13, 18, 23, 28, 33

• There are 5 arithmetic means
between 3 and 33
EXAMPLES:
1. Insert 3 arithmetic means between 1 and 16.
Ans.: 5, 9 and 13
2. Find the missing term:
1 1
− , ___, −
2 50
13
Ans.: -
50
3. Supply the missing terms: 3125, ___, ___, ___, 5
Ans.: 2345, 1565, 785
To sum up the terms of the
arithmetic sequence:
a + (a+d) + (a+2d) + (a+3d) + ...
SUM OF use this formula:
ARITHMETIC 𝑛
S = (a1 + an)
SEQUENCE 2

or
𝑛
S= [2𝑎 + 𝑛 − 1 𝑑]
2
EXAMPLES:
1. Find the sum of the first 100 terms of an arithmetic
sequence 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, …
Ans.: 14,950

2. Find S20 of an A. S. if the first term is 8 and the 20th term is

-49
Ans.: -410

3. Consider the arithmetic sequence: 78, 75, 72, 69, …

Find a150 and S150
Ans.: a150 = -369 and S150 = -21,825
ANSWER THE FOLLOWING:
1. An arithmetic sequence is defined by a1 = 54 and d = -11.
Find a10 and S10.
2. Find a1 and d if:
a. a5 = 45 and a33 = 24
b. a30 = 13 and S30 = -480
3. A theater has 30 rows of seats. The first row contains 20
seats, and so on, each row has one more seat than the
previous one. How many seats are there in the theater?
4. There are 130 students in grade one, 210 students in
grade two and 290 students in grade three in an
elementary school, and so on in an arithmetic sequence.
How many graduating students are there and what is the
total amount of students are there?
