INTRODUCTION
 Filler slab technology - simple and innovative technology
for slab construction

 RCC
 Concrete – strong in compression
 Steel – strong in tension
 RCC slab resists both compression and tension.
 Filler slab- cost effective roofing technology
 It is not easy to remove, the concrete from the tension
zone, hence concrete can be replace (partially); that part of
concrete using light weight and low cost filler material.
This method of construction is called filler slab.
 Filler materials are placed without compromising
structural strength, stability and durability,
replacing unwanted and non-functional tension
concrete, from below - resulting in cost savings
(20%)and decreased dead load.

 Improved thermal comfort for the interiors.

 Lower dead weight transferred to the supporting
elements and foundation resulting in cost saving
in design of these elements.
FILLER MATERIAL

• Light weight, inert and inexpensive materials

• Low grade Mangalore tiles, Thermopolis Burnt
Clay Bricks, Hollow Concrete blocks, Stabilized
Mud blocks/ Hollow Mud blocks, Clay pots,
Coconut shells etc.
• These materials are laid in the grids of steel
reinforcement rods and concreting is done
over them.
FILLER MATERIAL SELECTION
 Inert - should not react with concrete or steel
 Water absorption must be checked so that it does not
absorb water from concrete.
 Light weight –reduces overall weight of slab and dead load
to foundations
 Low cost - much lesser than the cost of the concrete it
replaces- economy.
 Should be of a size and cross-section, which can be
accommodated within the spacing of the reinforcement
and also thickness wise could be accommodated within the
cross section of the slab.
 Should match with the desired ceiling finish requirements
so as not to provide an ugly ceiling pattern.
INSTALLING FILLER MATERIAL IN THE SLAB

Filler material should be decided before slab is

designed
Its dimension will help to decide the spacing
of reinforcement and depth of slab
Soak in water so that it does not absorb any
water from concrete.
Mangalore tiles can be installed in two layers
(one over the other) entrapping an air cavity
between the two tiles. This will improve the
thermal properties of the slab.
