WHAT IS STATISTICS

• Statistics is the study of the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation and presentation of
data. It also serve as:
• A tool in decision making:

Research objectives
Research hypotheses
• Statistics as a process to: Collect

WHAT IS SPSS

• Statistical Package for the Social Sciences

• A software package that is used for statistical analysis.
• We can analyze data in three basic ways
1) Allows to Describe data using descriptive statistics (e.g. frequencies, mean, min, max and SD)
2) Examine relationship between variables in your data (e.g. correlation analysis, regression
analysis)
3) Compare groups to determine if there are significant differences between these groups (e.g.
T-test, ANOVA, & non-parametric statistics)
THE TWO MAIN WINDOWS IN SPSS

1) Data Editor – is where you create variables, enter data, and carry out statistical
functions.
There are two tabs in the data editor
1. Data View
• Rows - represents individual cases e.g. age, gender, level of education and etc.
• Columns – represents the particular variable in your data file
2. Variable View - use to create and define various characteristics of variables
• Rows - represents individual variables
• Columns – represents the specific characteristics of those variable
THE TWO MAIN WINDOWS IN SPSS

• Output Viewer – the second major window. This simple show the result of any analysis in
the SPSS including charts, tables.
1. Left side – contains an outline and menu which gives you a full lists of all the analysis that
you performed. You can use this side to navigate your output
2. Right side – are the results of the analysis which can includes tables, chart and graphs
DATA ENTRY AND CODING

• Before you can enter the information from your questionnaire, interviews
or experiment into SPSS it is necessary to prepare a ‘codebook’
• This is a summary of the instructions you will use to convert the
information obtained from each subject or case into a format that SPSS
can understand.
• Preparing the codebook involves deciding (and documenting) how you will
go about:
• • defining and labelling each of the variables; and
• • assigning numbers to each of the possible responses
