Systems Thinking
• System Thinking is a way of helping a
person to view systems from a broad
perspective that includes seeing overall
structures, patterns and cycles in systems,
rather than seeing only specific events in
the system.
Systems Thinking
• System Thinking is an analytical approach
that allows us to perceive relationships
and processes among the parts of a whole.
Focal Community Systems
• The community identified as in
need of an organizing effort.
• Focal Community Systems are
composed of smaller micro-
systems, cooperate and compete
with meta-systems, and relate to
various larger mezzo-systems.
Characteristics of Focal
Community Systems
• Exist over a reasonable period of
time.
• Have established roles through
which people interact in
predictable, on going patterns.
• Show evidence of established
customs and laws.
Characteristics of Focal
Community Systems
• Be comprised of micro-systems
that meet specific needs or
represent specific populations and
interests.
• Have an equilibrium that is
relatively stable over time.
Micro-Systems
• Are the major internal
components or parts of a focal
system. The micro-systems are
where community life is lived.
Meta-Systems
• Other communities that are similar
to the focal community; neighbors
of focal community.
• It is about other systems, such as
describing, generalizing,
modelling, or analyzing the other
systems.
Mezzo-Systems
• The political, economic, and
cultural systems that surround and
support your focal community
system.
• Have a direct or indirect impact
on the success of your community
organizing efforts.
Macro-Systems
• The natural, social, and cultural
environments which surround the
focal system and its micro- and
mezzo-systems.
Kaleidoscopic Community
Systems
• KALEIDOSCOPIC – quickly changing
from one thing to another
• The continual shifts in the roles and
relationships of community members
that characterize community decision
making and action.
