Science Investigatory

Project
(SIP)
Eleazar B. Miones
What is an SIP?

uses the scientific method to study and test an idea

about how something works (whether it can be used as
an alternative or enhances the function of a previous
design).

Example:
Testing the tensile strength of a cogon fiber if possible as
an alternative for nylon rope
Why conduct SIP?

New discoveries may have great impact to

science, technology, and society
Effects of Lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus), San
Francisco (Codiaeum variegatum), Tawa-tawa (Euphorbia
hirta) on the Growth and Development of the Mosquito,
Aedes aegypti, a Vector of Dengue Virus

Abstract

 summarizes, usually in one paragraph of 250 words or less, the major

aspects of the entire paper in a prescribed sequence that
includes:
1. Short background of the study
2. Objectives of the study
3. Materials and methods
4. Results
5. Conclusion and significance

Introduction

 This is where you describe the purpose for doing your science fair
project or invention. It must present the following:
1. Background of the Study
2. Hypothesis and Statement of the Problem
3. Objectives
4. Significance
5. Limitations of the Study

Materials and Methods

 It should provide enough details so that others can repeat the

experiments following the methods written in the research paper
 It should include significant steps such as gathering of materials,
preparing of set-ups, tests and experimentations
 Official title of international/established procedures or tests used in
experiments can be written instead of describing its detailed steps
(ex. Rotary Evaporation) however if the test is modified, it must be
indicated

Why use 0.05 level of

significance?
Level of Significance

0.10 Level of Significance – Business Research

0.05 Level of Significance – Social Science, Science Research
0.01 Level of Significance – Medical Research
Results

 Includes all data gathered from the experiments which can be

presented through tables, graphs, figures, etc.
 Tables, graphs, figures, etc. should EACH have their respective
captions. A good caption must have a Table/Graph/Figure Number
and a short description
 No discussions should be presented in this part of the research
paper; more than 90% of this part shows only tables, graphs, figures
Results
Discussion

This part of the research paper should be treated as the

“soul” of the research paper and not just as an accessory
part
Most of the related literatures are integrated in this part
and not in the Introduction
Discussion

What are the implications of the results and trends derived

from data analysis conducted?
What are the other related research that agree with such
results and trends?
What are established scientific knowledge that can
explain or justify such results and trends?
Discussion

It discussed the result of

the statistics

discussion
Discussion

The researcher applied

qualitative analysis on the
morphology of the larvae
Conclusion

It summarizes the results of the research

It should not generalize and should present only
the conclusion based on the results
It should mention a practical application
Conclusion
Results are summarized

Practical application is
mentioned
Recommendation

It presents what else could be done to improve

the research
Recommendation
Acknowledgement

It includes a FORMAL AND DIRECT message of thanks to

the people who contributed SIGNIFICANTLY to the
research
It usually includes the names of the adult-sponsor,
qualified scientist, regulated research institute, and
sponsors if there any
References/Bibliography

It includes all books, journals, credible websites and all

other resources that were used as reference
Citation style must be consistent; usual citation formats
include APA Style, MLA Style, Chicago Manual of Style
