Introduction
Communication is What?
It is a process of conveying ideas, views, faces, and
information from one person to other through either spoken or written
words or non-verbal actions, with an intension to influence the attitude
and the behavior of the person.

Definition
According to Keith Davis says,”Communication is the
process of passing information and understanding from one
person to another”
Characteristics Of Communication

Following are the characteristics of communication:


 It involves more than one person.
 It deals with the transmission of facts.
 Medias of communication may be numerous.
 Since a business organization has continuity, the process of
communication is also a continuous process.
 The effectiveness of communication largely depends upon the proper
understanding of what is being received and the responded.
 It involves both information and understanding.
Process of Communication
The process of communication includes:
 Sender
 Encoding
 Channel
 Message
 Receiver
 Decoding
 Feedback
 Channel
 Sender
Types of communication
People communicate with each other in a number of ways
depend upon the message and its content in which it is being sent.
Communication is broadly classified into Two categories:
1.Verbal Communication
It refers to the form of communication in which message is
transmitted verbally. Communication is done by word of mouth and a piece of
writing.
I. Oral Communication
II. Written Communication
2. Non-Verbal Communication
Non-verbal communication is sending or receiving of wordless
message. Such as gesture, body language, posture and facial expression is
called as non-verbal communication.
Level of Communication
1. Intrapersonal Communication :
Communication that occurs in your mind.(Feelings, Beliefes)
2. Interpersonal Communication:
It is the communication between two people(can be Formal or Informal)
3. Small Group Communication:
It is a communication with in formal or informal groups or teams. Its is a group
interaction that results in making decisions, problem solving and discussion within an
organisation. (Example. Discussion amongst people)
4. One-to-Group Communication:
It involves a speaker who seeks to inform, convey information or motivate an
audience(Example. A Teacher and the class students)
5. Mass Communication:
It is the electronic or print transmission of message to the general
public.(Example. Radio, Television, Flim)
Barriers of Communication

1. Physical Barrier
Difference in living standards(Rich or Poor)
2. Perceptual Barrier
Difference in thinking/Beliefs.
3. Cultural Barrier
Difference in Cultural background.
4. Language Barrier
Lack of common language.
5. Gender Barrier
Biased behaviour regarding change in gender.

Communication
 Taking the receiver seriously
 Crystal clear message
 Delivering message skilfully
 Focusing on the receiver
 Using multiple channels to communicate instead relying on one channel
 Ensuring appropriate feedback
 Be aware of your own state of mind/emotions/attitude
