INTEGRATED SCIENCE 1

What is Diffraction of Waves?
The property of waves that bend/spread
out after a gap, or an obstacle.
Interference and Diffraction ARE NOT
the same
 Interference-The effect of two waves interfering with each other, for
example, two stones thrown into a pool of water.
 Diffraction-The diffraction phenomenon is described as the apparent
bending of waves around small obstacles and the spreading out of waves
past small openings.
What is Diffraction of Waves?
 Diffracted waves spread out and bends around
obstacles and gaps at decreasing amplitude while the
wavelength, frequency, and speed remains unchanged
as compared to the incident wave.
Waves bend around an obstacle
Waves spread out and change to semi-
circular shape after passing through a
narrow gap
The diffracted waves are almost straight in
shape with only a slight curve at the edges
after passing through a gap wider than the
wavelength of the waves
