Arts and Crafts of Lanao
Maranao tribe is the inhabitant of
Lanao.
A Maranao word “Ranao” meaning a
body of water. Maranao means lake
dweller. They are the natives
occupying the central part of Lanao
where the Lake Lanao is situated.
Maranao have a very rich cultural heritage.
Textiles, Metal works, wood craft and architure
are all important cultural expressions all of which
utilize the traditional Maranao form decoration,
Okir.
Okir refers to a geometric and flowing designs
based on leaf and vine patterns
Okir’s prominence in the Maranao art can be
found in the Torogan, an ancestral home of the
highest titleholder in a maranao village which
symbolizes power and prestige.
Okir can also be found etched in knives,
sword handles and blades or casted into
brass and silver objects such as the
musical instruments.
Other variations of Okir involves the
Naga or serpent motif and the Sarimanok,
a rooster-like figure that carries a fish in
its beak.
Weaving textile in Tugaya includes
traditional Southeast Asian back-
strap loom weaving, utilizing
indigenous okir decorative motifs.
Expert needle-weaving produces the
complex langkit panels which are
incorporated into the traditional
Maranao garment, the malong
landap.
Arts and Crafts of Zamboanga
Zamboanga is considered as the Asias Latin City.
Subanen are the first inhabitant of Zamboanga. Subanen means the people of
the river from the word suba meaning river.
Yakan people are primarily farmers.
Yakans are the best weavers in the Peninsula and the neighboring province of
Basilan. They use symmetrical designs made of rectangular shaped, triangles,
squares and combinations of various lines (wavy, crossed and straight).
Seputangan is the most famous and intricate design worn by women around
their waist or as head cloth.
Tausug community comes from the Sulu Archipelago. Tausog
are also called the people of the current

Tausug male hat is made by weaving nito with bamboo over


nipa leaves.
