ANTHROPOMETRY AND

ERGONOMICS in
INTERIOR DESIGN
• ANTHROPOMETRY is the scientific study and measurements of
the human body.

• ERGONOMICS is the science of the relationship between man and

machinery and the equipment human beings use , and the
working environment .having something that is called
ergonomic means that the item has been designed to maximum
productivity by minimizing effort and discomfort.
Major role of anthropometry ,
• Comfortably fitting the human being into an interior
• These are factors that need to be considered when
designing joinery or cabinetry , furniture, planning
circulation space , work space , accessible spaces and
to generally make the user COMFORTABLE in their
environment.
anthropometric measurements are taken as per the
average human being measurements and the
drawings are of human beings performing various
functions and movements.

SEATING MEASUREMENTS

• To function properly, its design must be responsive to human dimension.

• The considerable variation in human body size , demands the exercise of a great deal of personal judgement
• It is primarily intended for relaxation and comfort qualities which are highly personal.
• The following suggestions should also prove helpful
I. The angle formed by thighs and trunk should not less than 105 degree
II. The front edge of the seat should be rounded to prevent irritation.
III. the seat surface should should tilt backwards.
IV. If the angle formed by the backrest with the vertical exceeds 30 degree provisions for a headrest will be
required in the form of a separate design element or extension of the backrest itself.

except very small females ,
who may require a 40.6cm or

user, however, can function
with a greater seat height by
using a footrest.

Living space

the various activities and elements of furniture usually associated with living spaces result in many levels of
interface between the human body and the physical components of the space. The most obvious is between the
user and the chair or sofa.

Circulation around seating elements must accommodate maximum body breadth , while the location of a coffee
table in relation to a chair should be responsive to human reach dimensions.

The height at which a painting is hung on a wall should be determined in relationship to eye height.

The drawings at the top and the center deal

with the major clearances involved in lounge
or conversational seating. The top drawing is
based on conversational grouping in which
the clearance between the front of the seat
and the edge of the tables is limited between
40.6 and 45.7cm. This clearance may require
some degree of body contact or side stepping
for circulation and access.
Dining space

• The relationship between human dimension and dining spaces , the areas of most concern to the designer are
the clearances around the table and the number of people a table of a particular size can accommodate.
• The clearance between the edge of the table and the wall or any other physical obstruction must at the very last
accommodate two elements.
a) the space occupied by the chair.
b) The maximum breadth of a person of larger body size as he circulates between the chair and the wall.
• The place seating zone represents the personal activity space directly in front of the individual diner.
• It should be of adequate size to accommodate the necessary dinnerware , silverware , glassware etc.
• The width of this zone should also accommodate the human dimension and body positions assumed during the
eating process.
The above drawing provides additional The above drawing illustrates the
clearance information and suggests a clearance suggested for wheelchair
