POPULATION EXPLOSION &

URBANIZATION IN PAKISTAN
Urbanization
• Urbanization refers to the increasing number of people that live in
urban areas.
• It predominantly results in the physical growth of urban areas, be it
horizontal or vertical.
• The United Nations projected that half of the world's population
would live in urban areas at the end of 2008.
• By 2050 it is predicted that 64.1% and 85.9% of the developing
and developed world respectively will be urbanized.
• Urbanization is closely linked to modernization, industrialization,
and the sociological process of rationalization.
• Urbanization can describe a specific condition at a set time, i.e. the
proportion of total population or area in cities or towns, or the
term can describe the increase of this proportion over time.
Urbanization in Pakistan
• Urbanization in Pakistan has increased since the time of
independence and has several different causes. The majority of
southern Pakistan's population lives along the Indus River. Karachi is
its most populous city.
• In the northern half of the country, most of the population lives in
an arc formed by the cities
of Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot, G
ujrat, Jhelum, Sargodha, Sheikhupura, Nowshera, Mardanand Pesha
war.
• During 1990–2008, city dwellers made up 36% of Pakistan's
population, making it the most urbanised nation in South Asia.

• Furthermore, 50% of Pakistanis live in towns of 5,000 people or

more
Urbanization in Pakistan
• The majority of people in Pakistan live in the
countryside, with only one-third of the country's
estimated 188 million inhabitants currently are
in cities. But things are changing rapidly.

• Pakistan is urbanizing at an annual rate of three

percent – the fastest pace in South Asia.

• The United Nations Population Division

estimates that, by 2025, nearly half the
country's population will live in urban areas.

Reasons Why Pakistan Is Going Through An
“Overpopulation” Crisis

• Here are some reasons that are actually the causes

of the current over-population crisis Pakistan is
going through.
Lack of Woman empowerment
• Due to the chauvinist beliefs
of our society, it is
presumed that men have
more authority over
women. Women are subject
to accepting anything that is
thrown their way, thus, if
the man wants more kids –
the wife has to obey
accordingly without second
questioning the husband’s
decision and turning into a
baby-making-machine.
Illiteracy Among The Masses In
Pakistan
• Illiteracy Among The
Masses In Pakistan
Strong Religious Beliefs That Focus On Expanding
The Family

• Since our religion

encourages expanding
the family, our people
are mostly driven by
this obscene concept.
Recently, there was a
man from Quetta who
had 50+ children from 3
wives, and he planned
to further expand his
family.
Increase Of Immigration And Afghan Refugees

• Increase Of Immigration And Afghan

Refugees
• It is not just the general Pakistani
public, the country caters to the
largest numbers of immigrants in the
world – especially Afghan refugees,
which have lead to an increase in the
overpopulation of this small country.
• The growing population of Pakistan
has caused us many problems – the
government needs to resort to ways
to control it; like providing better
education, raising awareness of
family planning and most
importantly, the long-awaited census.

Lack Of Family Planning
• he masses of Pakistan
have no idea about
family planning – they
are not used to the
term “bachay do hi
achay!” – although
there are several Sabz
Sitara clinics that
provide ‘Chaabi wali
goliyan’ for a controlled
family.
Imbalance Between Birth And Death Rate

• Since there is a vast

imbalance between birth
rate and death rate in
Pakistan, more than
31/1000 at the peak of its
times, more people are
being born than dying in
the country – which is
leading to overpopulation
in the country.
