WHAT IS POLLUTION?
an undesirable change in the physical, chemical or ecological
characteristics of the air or land that may or will harmfully affect
human life and other living organisms
he presence in or introduction into the environment of a substance
or thing that has harmful or poisonous effects.
Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural
environment that cause adverse change.
Pollution can take the form of chemical substances or energy, such
as noise, heat or light.
Pollutants, the components of pollution, can be either foreign
substances/energies or naturally occurring contaminants.
Sources of Pollution
v industrialization
one of the main goals of “globalization”
it could also bring devastating and long- term negative effects in our
environment
power plants also use large amounts of smog oxidants and sulfur oxides
v population growth
reasons that explain the continuous increase of population rate in the
Philippines:
Poverty
lack of information on population control traditional/religious beliefs
issues on sex education
note that if these issues are not resolved immediately, the Philippine
population rate would increase
the main types of pollution are:
Water Pollution.
Air Pollution.
Soil Pollution.
Thermal Pollution.
Radioactive Pollution.
Noise Pollution.
Thermal pollution
Air Pollution
refers to the introduction of harsh gaseous substances into the air which
are detrimental to human health
air also contains various particles, liquid droplets due to evaporation, air-
borne viruses and bacteria
chemical substances which contribute to air pollution:
carbon monoxide, chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) and nitrogen oxides
air consists of tiny particles such as soot, cement dust and fly ash –
PARTICULATES
sources of air pollution:
power generation
waste incineration
Industry
transportation
Air Pollution
Forms: Effects:
Smoke Breathing discomfort
Carbon dioxide Lung Cancer
Carbon monoxide Tuberculosis
Sulfur Dioxide Common Colds
Ashes Bronchitis
Smog pneumoconiosis (disease of the lung)
Nitrogen Oxide Asthma
Hydrocarbons Emphysema (air sacs of lungs damaged
Water Pollution
humans do not realize that some of their
activities lead to polluting our planet’s water
supply
