 HYPOTHESIS
Ho: There is no significant difference in the blood glucose
levels of prediabetic individuals before and after treatment
with Syzygium aqueum extract

The genus Syzygium has been widely studied for its anti-
hyperglycemic effect.
(Nair, 2017)

The effectiveness of Syzygium aqueum leaf extract in

inhibiting the carbohydrate hydrolyzing enzyme, a-
glucosidase and a-amylase at more significant levels than
the commercial drug acarbose was revealed.
(Palanisamy and Manaharam, 2015)

Sub-acute toxicity studies using Sprague Dawley rats

showed no toxicity effects of the S. aqueum leaf extract of
up to concentrations of 2,000 mg/kg.

The fruit contains anthocyanins, delphinidin, petunidin, and

malvidin-diglucosides. These compounds stimulate insulin
secretion from experimental diabetic rat’s in vitro.

Syzygium aqueum acts likes sulphonylurea and biguanids

which stimulates existing beta cells to secrete insulin.
(Ayyanar and Subash-babu, 2012)

Syzygium aqueum has a beneficial effect in the treatment

of DM 2 as it improves the glycemic profile in newly
diagnosed type 2 diabetics.
(Sahana et al. 2010)

Syzygium aqueum seed powder has moderate

hypoglycemic effects and ameliorates symptoms
associated with DM such as polyuria, polyphagia,
weakness, and weight loss.
