Introduction
WHAT IS CHEMICAL???
A chemical is any substance consisting of matter. This
includes any liquid, solid, or gas. A chemical is any pure
substance (an element) or any mixture (a solution,
compound, or gas). Chemicals occur naturally and can be
made artificially.
Combustion reactions, such as a burning candle, are

also examples of the chemical change through the
combination of wax and oxygen in a reaction that
produces heat, light, and carbon dioxide. Decomposition,
the opposite of combination, occurs when a single
substance breaks down into two or more different
substances.
DEFINITION OF HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL???
Definition of Hazardous Chemicals
Hazardous chemicals are substances or

preparations that are capable of causing harm
either through its physical and chemical properties
or its toxicity.
It can be in the form of dust, gas, liquid,
compound or mixtures; natural or

STORAGE OF CHEMICAL
Storage of chemical is according to compatibility and not in

alphabetical order.
Secondary containment is used to contain spillage
 Store is closed at all times and proper signage

 Flammable-liquids storage cabinets are not intended for the
storage of materials that are highly toxic, acid/bases,
compressed gases and pyrolytic chemicals.
 Ensure containers closed tightly.
 Solvent stored with clearly labeled
 Safety data sheets available at all times.
 Quantities kept to a minimum.
 Strict No Smoking Policy.
 Avoid proximity of heating appliances.

TYPES OF PPE USED IN HEALTHCARE SETTINGS
• Gloves – Protects hands

• Gowns / Aprons – Protect skin and / or clothing
• Masks and Respirators – Protect mouth / nose/
respiratory tract
• Goggles – Protect eyes.
• Face shield – Protect face, mouth, nose, and
eyes.
The Occupational Safety & Health Act
1994: Section 24(1) :
states that employees who are provided

with personal protective equipment or
clothing must wear or use them at all
times & in accordance to safety
instructions.

This regulations is to set a standard of exposure of

chemical hazardous to health to the worker at
workplace.

CHEMICAL SPILLAGE
1. Secure the area using the warning signs or barriers
2. Take the chemical spillage kit
3. Don appropriate PPE
4. Use the absorbent pad to mop up the bulk of spillage.
5. Place the used absorbent pad in the plastic zip bag
( prelabelled SW 408)
ZIP BAG LABEL

6. Wipe off any remaining chemical or any contaminated soil and
place into the plastic zip bag.
7. Place the plastic zip bag ( LABEL SW 408) in the
chemical waste container/ bin
8. Discard all of the disposable PPE ALSO into
the PLASTIC ZIP BAG LABEL SW 408 before
put it into the chemical waste container/bin as
the gloves being the first to be removed.
9.When the affected area is clear and safe, remove the
warning signs.
