Facebook • Mark Zuckerberg is best known for inventing Facebook • Whist studying at Harvard, he came up with an idea for a social networking site, with help from his friends, Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes and Eduardo Saverin. • This site allowed users to create profiles, upload pictures, and communicate with other users. They called it "The Facebook". • The site was ran from a Harvard dorm room until June 2004, when Zuckerberg dropped out of school to devote his time to The Facebook. • By the end of 2004, Facebook had reached 1 million users. Mark faces his first dilemma • In 2004, Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss, and Divya Narendra filed a lawsuit against Zuckerberg, claiming he agreed to help them start a social networking site called “Harvard Connection”. • A few month after thefacebook.com was launched, they launched their site which they renamed ConnectU. • In September 2004 ConnectU sued Zuckerberg for allegedly stealing their idea. • In February 2008 they agreed to settle the suit but, in June of the same year, ConnectU appealed the settlement accusing Facebook of trading its stock without disclosing material information. • Facebook agreed to pay $20 million in cash, and transfer over 1.2 million common shares.
