MIS OF BATA
In June, 2000, Bata contracted SAP to implement its R/3 system in
Canada, software that would eventually help run Bata operations
around the world, SAP claims.
The shoe company claims SAP said that licensing and
implementation would cost Bata $2.8-million. SAP assured Bata
that R/3 had been tested and would be up and running by
February, 2001, Bata claims.

MIS OF BATA
❖R/3 lacked "significant functionality" and was unable to
manage footwear distribution, accounting and inventory, Bata
claims. The speed of processing orders across the chain slowed
by at least 30 per cent, the shoe company alleges.
❖SAP implemented its Business Warehouse software, describing
the product as the "cure all" for R/3, Bata claims. But BW meant
"a whole new set of problems" for Bata, including slower
response time and unreliable sales and inventory data, the
company claims.

MIS OF BATA
By December, 2001, the cost of implementing the SAP system had
"ballooned" to more than $8-million. Bata cancelled the SAP
contract.
In its Oct. 21, 2002, lawsuit, SAP claims Bata failed to pay retail
sales tax on a series on invoices, funds that the software company
itself paid to the Ontario government.
"SAP has provided valuable services to the defendants [Bata]
including remitting payments to third parties . . . the defendants
have been enriched and the plaintiffs [SAP] have suffered a
corresponding deprivation," SAP alleges.
Bata claims it has "no knowledge" of owing taxes, and claims it
has a provincial order confirming SAP's invoiced items are tax
exempt.
