Dear

Social Media…

Why do I let
you have so
much power
over me?
Many of my generation is stuck to our devices because
we feel we can connect through you. And that’s true…

However, it is a connection
that takes more than gives,
our time slips away as we
fall deeper into random
posts, and we become so
reliant on you in order to
feel like we have an identity

worth anything.
Without a
social media
presence, we
feel we don’t
exist, or aren’t
worth attention

It is all to easy to become a victim to harsh bullying in the form of hateful

comments. People easily get a way to swoop in anonymously just to bring
you down.
This all leads to
social media being the perfect
place for anyone to fall into Cleanses are a common, if
depression and self-hate. Many temporary, solution. Making the
people, even celebrities, such as choice to “cleanse” yourself of
Demi Lovato, Ed Sheeran, Ariana social media and deleting all your
Grande, and many more, have social media apps or ‘turning off’
already crumbled beneath the the app, preventing all
paths of hate you provide to the notifications, which is something
toxic people lurking at home… that more platforms have begun
to offer. But many times, social
media once again will have a sway
over you since you need to be
able to have that promise of
connection through it.

I don’t want to say you’re evil,
social media, but you should be
treated only as a resource
for people, and not something to
be worshipped on a plinth, or have
power as an overbearing
dictator telling us how to feel and
live.

Users as a whole need
to strive to take back
the power you have
over us and use it to
bolster one another
up, instead of tearing
down.
Together we can
begin making a
change. Turning
social media
platforms into
something more
accepting and….

There is potential for something valuable to be forged
from something that has become so broken. All we
need to do as users is let the ones behind it all know.
Doing what we can to get rid of the hate now is a great
step to start assembling the pieces for a better world.
