Who Are Maori?
● Indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand.
● They arrived in New Zealand in several waves of canoe voyages some time
between 1250 and 1300.
New Zealand
➢ New Zealand had two Island.
➢ North Island is more of a hilly/ flat areas.
➢ South has more of the mountains and is larger than the north.
History
➢ The Māori are originally Southeast Asia from Hawaiki also now known as China.
➢ Between 1200 A.D to 1300 A.D the Māori voyaged on Waka Hourua .
➢ Used the term Maori to describe themselves in a pan-tribal sense.
Religions and rituals
➢ They practice multiple religions such as Christianity, Rua Kenana and Maori.
➢ They have many beliefs and rituals. Example when fishing men start fishing they
always throw back their fist catch to tangaroa sea god.
Dance and tattoos
➢ Haka dance is popular dance known around the world.
➢ The dance was used on the battlefield.
➢ Their tattoos are call Ta Moka.
