Fig. 2. Plan of the excavations (A) and stratigraphic sequence (B-C) at Mata Menge
and the geological context of the site (D). B shows the north baulk of Trench VI. C
shows the west baulks of excavation II/97 and Trench III. The locations of in situ
stone artefacts are shown in the sections as black dots. The basal Unit A consists of
tuffaceous mudstone deposited in a low-energy paludrine or lacustrine environment
and contains stone artefacts. A fission-track date indicates an upper age of 0.88
0.07 myr BP. Unit B lies uncomformably atop Unit A, and is the main fossil- and
artefact-bearing horizon at Mata Menge. It is comprised of alternating layers and
lenses of amalgamated tuffaceous siltstone and sands (upper Unit B), and well-
consolidated tuffaceous sandstone (lower Unit B). A fission-track date from near the
top indicates an age of 0.80 0.07 myr BP. Unit B is overlaid by an alternation of
undated sands and silts (Unit C) containing very few stone artefacts and no fossils,
and undated topsoil (Unit D). Lower Unit B is represented by coarse-grained, poorly
sorted sandstone layers (Subunits B1 and B2a). Overlying Subunit B2a is a succession
of small sandy channel-fills, bar-structures and tuffaceous siltstones (Subunits B2b to
B5b). These are overlaid by homogenous tuffaceous sandy silts (Subunits B3a-b), and
sandy lenses (Subunit B4a).

sequence. The arrows with
broken lines show probable
technological continuums
and/or overlap of morphological
categories. Two hammerstones
were identified in the
assemblage: one is an
elongated
volcanic/metavolcanic cobble
(Wt ¼ 372 g) with bashing at
both ends, the other is a
somewhat smaller (Wt ¼ 270 g)
volcanic/ metavolcanic cobble
with micro-flaking at one end
and probable bashing at the
other. One radial core and two
multiplatform coresdall
volcanic/metavolcanicdwere
also used as hammerstones
Unifacial radial cores, Mata
Menge. Both cores are made on
volcanic/metavolcanic cobbles or
cobble flakes/fragments. Arrows
indicate taphonomic damage. Scale
50 mm.
