WHAT IS PROJECT MANAGEMENT ?
• Project management is the practice of initiating,
planning, executing, controlling, and closing
the work of a team to achieve specific goals and
meet specific success criteria at the specified
time.
• The primary challenge of project management is
to achieve all of the project goals within the given
constraints.
• The primary constraints are scope,
time, quality and budget. The secondary
constraints are more ambitious and the challenge
is to optimize the allocation of necessary inputs
and apply them to meet pre-defined objectives.
AI IN PROJECT PLANNING CYCLE
1. Knowledge Based Expert Systems (KBES)
• An experienced project manager will be aware that
sudden changes to project requirements can cause
failure.
• A KBE system consists of a knowledge base and
inference engine. It makes use of a series of IF-THEN
statements, which give critical conclusions for the
planning and scheduling phases of a project.
• A project manager’s experiential knowledge can be fed
into the KBES.
• The system can then accurately estimate project
duration and resource requirements for several project
activities.
2. Artificial Neural Networks (ANN)
• ANN finds heavy use in construction projects.
• It predicts cost overruns based on several parameters like project
size, contract type and the competence of project managers.
• It automates project activity sequencing based on the functional
requirements provided in the project initiation document.

3. Fuzzy Logic
• Loosely based on the Boolean true or false logic, Fuzzy determines
the project priorities in the Portfolio management processes.
• It is widely used in construction projects to optimize cost-time trade
offs. This works out favorably for construction project managers
who want least cost routing to work out the logistics of having
material supplied on-site.
• One can model probability distributions to assess risks in
construction projects.
• Although, not give accurate reasoning, but acceptable reasoning.
AI IN PROJECT DELIVERY
• Near the end of project delivery, there are 3
areas where AI provides conflict-resolution
1. Risk Estimation
2. Resource Management
3. Predictive Analytics
1. Risk Estimation
• One can factor in budgeting and scheduling constraints
to make informed decisions on risk management.
• In Programmatic errors, algorithms may not perform as
expected and may deliver misleading results that have
serious consequences.
• As humans, we’re limited by our capacity to store and
reproduce information at will.
• With Machine learning one can retrieve parametric
information as and when required.
• For instance, one can can use past data such as
planned start and end dates to predict realistic
timelines for future projects. The system can add an
upper and lower bound to these dates to account for
delays within reason.
2. Resource Management

• To ensure projects remain on track, it is essential that the right

people work on them.
• AI can analyze past projects and resources to produce an optimal
project schedule. If there is a change in project scope or if the
resource plan is changed, AI can immediately provide a revised
schedule at as well.
• AI helps staff to remotely access real-life training material which
reduces the time taken to onboard them on to new projects. As a
result, project delivery is quickened.
• AI can recommend the best suited employees for a project by
matching project requirements with the skill sets of the employees
registered in the database. If there are no suitable resources
available, it can recommend the training that the employees need
or in some cases, scan external databases and provide a list of
suitable candidates who can be hired for the project.
3. Predictive Analytics:
• Intuitive forecasting is a statistical approach that
validates project. Not only it points out the right number
and type of resources (both human and technical) but
also reduces labor costs.
• The project team, one create can diagnose and solve
technical and/or personal conflicts that arise.
• The idea behind predictive forecasting is to strategically
identify and block risks before they take over the project.
This helps us to prepare the optimum project schedule.
AI Project Management Applications
Some machine learning powered project
management applications
• Forecast (used in forecasting)
• Knightspear (used in decision making and
problem solving)
• Teodesk (assigns mail that arrives to the
related project and people involved)
• Lili (prioritize to-do lists to reduce wait time)
EXAMPLES
• BIM 360 Field is used in construction to capture
photographic evidence of project sites
• Internet of Things(IoT), with over 200 million cars
slated to be connected to the internet by 2020,
manufacturers can use performance data to
detect and repair hardware issues.
• With vehicular safety of paramount importance,
automobile project managers can enhance fleet
management with the use of smart sensors

Intelligent system for factory
monitoring

KULGANI A

What is Factory Monitoring ?
• It is a process which optimizes production on the
basis of real-time data.
• A modern factory monitoring system identifies
process irregularities and automatically notifies
certain technicians or managers when needed.
• To speed up the troubleshooting process, smart
monitoring systems provide teams with the
necessary information and documentation –
anywhere, anytime, and on a wide range of
devices.
• Data can be collected from the machines directly
and automatically in real time.
• Intelligent software aggregates this data into
informative KPIs (Key Performance Indicator) with
options for quick and tracking of individual
products and components.
• Monitoring one’s factory in real time enables you
to respond instantly to all sorts of events
• The factory monitoring system is critically
important for the high productivity of the high-
mix/low-volume factory
Process sequence in Factory
Monitoring
1. Production monitoring
2. Material availability monitoring
3. Traceability
Production monitoring:
• Real-time collection of machine and process data
• Analysis, notification of the appropriate people, initiation of
corrective measures
• Automated reporting

Material availability monitoring:

• Real-time data on component and material consumption/ fill levels
on all machines
• Early warnings when machines are about to run out of material
enables proactive replenishment

Traceability:
• Recording of component and process data for all products
• Storing this data permits subsequent tracing c. Reliable process
interlocking
Indicators of weaknesses in factory
monitoring
It includes
• No real-time collection and visualization of
status and process data
• No integration of smart devices
• No traceable material and process information
about assembled products
• Reports and documentations are rigid and
paper-based
• High manual reporting effort
CASE STUDY
“The many parallel and complex work steps in our highly
flexible electronics production can be successfully
synchronized only on the basis of reliable and consistent real-
time data.”
Allesandro Bonara, Head of the ASM Electronics
Factory

Factory monitoring at ASM’s electronics factory in Germany:

• ASM operates one of the world's most modern and flexible

electronics factories in Munich and this company recently
won the prestigious “Factory of the Year” award

• ASM manufactures and tests with the help of robots small

lots of modules in sync with the placement machine
production, as well as development prototypes
• Monitors installed above the lines display status
information and notify the staff of upcoming
product changeovers and assists
• Other monitors in the factory display KPIs, order
and process data in real time
• Upon demand and in team meetings, the
associated detail data is available with just a few
clicks. Additional analyses and views can be easily
generated as well.
• Work instructions and documentations is
available online at all workplaces, which means
that they are always up-to-date
ASM Performance Monitor

• Real-time visualization of KPIs

• Configurable graphical target vs actual comparisons
• For all areas of the factory: scheduling, logistics, shop
floor, etc

ASM Traceability

• Process stability
• Maximum transparency
• Minimum effort
• Rapid data access
• Upgraded production
Results
▪ Low error rate due to the real-time collection
of production data
▪ Significant increase in the speed and reliability
of setup changeovers
▪ Optimized material flow and significantly
shorter travel distances
▪ Fewer in/out postings in the main material
warehouse
