Why might we care about this social media?

• Whatsapp is the most used communicative app in the world!

• This means that besides Interpersonal communication, much

of the worlds knowledge and news is shared on this platform.

Food for thought - Because of it’s ability to share

information freely, certain countries such as China
have banned it because of wanting to censor
media and monitor shared communication.
6
Why might we adopt this social media?
• It is free.
• Available to any smart phone user with Wifi
Internet Connection.
• Ability to share information, images, videos with
loved ones/professional work spaces/urgent news.
• Connected in general but also is used in times of
emergencies, ie. Location sharing.
• It is easy to use (all age user friendly).
• Creates a global community.
Food for thought: My 88 Year old grandmother is technologically
challenged, having her live half way across the world in the United
States communication can be tricky. However we are able to use
whatsapp to send voice notes to each other. Even though time zones

can be difficult, she can always hear my voice messages when she is
awake in California.

as prevalent - around the world, it is the most

What are the uses of this social media?

As we discussed, Whatsapp can be used personally or

professionally in order to communicate over messages
which include, text, images, voice, location and video.
It creates connectedness and a global community.

However a global use of this social media is to share

news and organize events through mass group texts.
Because of this, there are advantages and
disadvantages. We must be able to recognize and
separate real and fake news from each other.

Would you use it?
Since my first smart phone, I have had Whatsapp.
When I lived in the United States it was the only
time I used text or IMessage as opposed to
Whatsapp, however to communicate with
everyone in Hong Kong I still used Whatsapp.

I use Whatsapp because everyone I meet around

the world has it too. I find the app is useful as I
have diverse group conversations, such as certain
ones to plan birthday events with friends, one [Whatsapp icon] Google Images.
