INTRODUCTION
Biometrics are automated methods of recognizing a person based on a physiological or behavioral characteristics

 Biometrics refers to technologies that measure and analyze human body characteristics,
such as :
 Face
 Fingerprint
 Hand geometry
 Iris
 Retinal
 Signature
 Voice
 Human recognize each other according to their various characteristics for ages.

 We recognize others by their face when we meet them and their voice as we speak to them.

 To achieve more reliable verification or identification we should use something that really characterizes
the given person.
Types of Biometric Authentication
Technologies

• Analyzes facial characteristics. It requires a digital camera to develop a facial image of

the user for authentication

• A fingerprint scanner is an electronic device used to capture a digital image of the

fingerprint pattern. This scan is digitally processed to create a biometric template
which is store and used for matching.

• Analyzing the layer of blood vessels situated at the back of the eye. An established
technology, this technique involves using a low-intensity light source through an
optical coupler to scan the unique patterns of the retina.
Types of Biometric Authentication
Technologies

• Capture advanced biometric data for more accurate verification as it works with high
resolution and accuracy.

• Habitual speaking recognition. Voice recognition systems analyze difference such as in

pitch and tone. Sensitive to environmental conditions such as background noise.

• Analyzing and measuring the shape of the hand. This biometric offers a good balance
of performance characteristics and is relatively easy to use. It might be suitable where
there are more users or where users access the system infrequently
HOW BIOMETRICS WORKS
ADVANTAGES OF BIOMETRICS
No Item
1 Biometrics identification can provide extremely accurate, secured access to information; fingerprints, retinal and iris
scans produce absolutely unique data sets when done properly

2 Automated biometric identification can be done very rapidly and uniformly, with a minimum of training

3 Biometrics cannot be lost, stolen or forgotten. Barring disease or serious physical injury, the biometric is consistent
and permanent.

4 It is also secure in that the biometric itself cannot be socially engineered, shared or used by others

5 There are no requirement to remember passwords or PINs, thus eliminating an overhead cost. The biometric is
always available to the individual.

6 Reduce the criminal act of fraud

7 Prevent Unauthorized Access

DISADVANTAGES OF BIOMETRICS
No Item
1 Lack of standardization

2 Costly

3 The scanning of eye is fearful

4 Missing body part problem

5 False acceptances and rejection

6 The nervousness that people feel about the scanner identification

7 Facial imaging can also hinder accurate identification

CONCLUSION

 Even if the accuracy of the biometric technique is not perfect yet, there are many mature biometric
systems available now

 Proper design and implementation of the biometric system can indeed increase the overall security

 There are numerous conditions that must be taken in account when designing a secure biometric
system.
