SELF REGULATED LEARNING

WHY SHOULD WE USE GOAL-SETTING WITH OUR STUDENTS?

Goals can assist:

 Academic achievement
 Student engagement

From the perspective of the students:

“When you set a goal, it just makes you

want to work harder to make it”

GOAL ORIENTATIONS
Mastery goal orientation focused on learning and mastering the new tasks,
and ability increasing, competence and understanding of the tasks, and the
most important is the effort to improve self and learning, no matter how
many mistakes have been made. (Woolfolk, 2004; Meece & Holt, 1993 cited in
Dewi, N., & Mangunsong, F. 2013).

Performance goal orientation focused on efforts to obtain recognition from

other people that he/she is capable of and always attempt to avoid negative
evaluation from others. Student’s performance goal orientation is the
orientation objectives that focus on the inner capabilities and how these
skills are evaluated by others (Meece & Holt, 1993; Midgley & Middleton,
2001, cited in Dewi, N., & Mangunsong, F. 2013)
(Boschen,
2014)

PORTFOLIO
A Portfolio is a multi-faceted means of learning process, which
empowers teachers and learners to promote reflection and self-
examination (C. Chang, Tseng, Chou, & Chen, 2011). It is also a strategy
to browse others’ portfolios and give feedback (C. C. Chang et al., 2013)
(Torras & Mayordomo, 2011) (C. Chang & Tseng, 2009)(Nicolaidou,
2012).
