The Caltex Refinery distillation column has been
designed to separate a mixture containing 50%
hexane and 50% pentane by mass. The product

condensed stream is returned to the column as
reflux and the balance is drawn off as a product.
The reflux ratio, i.e. (mass of reflux/mass of

entering the column the feed is flash vaporized at 1 atm
to produce an equimolal vapor/liquid mixture (Vf/F =
Lf/F = 0.5). A reflux ratio 30% above the minimum is
specified.
