Brief Introduction
• IRNSS is an independent regional navigation satellite system
developed by ISRO.
• NAVIC signals will consist of a Standard Positioning Service
and a Precision Service. Both will be carried on L5 (1176.45
MHz) and S band (2492.028 MHz).

• Microstrip patch antenna has compact size, light weight, small

volume, and can be easily fabricated on a printed circuit board.
• The helical antenna is a travelling wave antenna, which means
the current travels along the antenna and the phase varies
continuously.
• The benefits of the helix antenna is it has wide bandwidth and
easy to construct.

Problem Statement
• The signal transmitted from the satellite has very low strength at
ground station. So, the receiver antenna must be able to receive
the signal effectively. The antenna must be able to capture as
much signal as possible with minimum noise signal.

11/30/2019 Department of ECE 4

Why is the particular topic chosen?
• As the problem statement shows, the signal strength is low at the
ground station. So, there is a need for developing antenna for
effectively receiving the IRNSS satellite signals.

• Microstrip antennas are relatively inexpensive to manufacture

and design.they are usually employed at UHF and higher
frequencies .
• Helical antenna has wide bandwidtheasily constructed and can
produce circularly polarised fields

Objective and scope of the project

• Our primary objective of the project is to design, simulate and

fabricate the antenna which effectively receives the IRNSS
signal at the ground station.

11/30/2019 Department of ECE 6

Methodology
• The microstrip antenna is to be designed using the design
equations for 2.49GHz. After designing the microstrip antenna,it
is simulated using the High Frequency Structural
Simulator(HFSS).
• The results obtained after simulation are verified. If the obtained
results are not matched with the expected results, then the design
is refined.
• The antenna is fabricated using the dimensions obtained after
simulation.
• A second helical antenna is to be designed ,simulated and
fabricated.
• The performance of the microstrip antenna and helical antenna
to be compared

What contribution would the project make?
• The antenna developed will be able to receive the IRNSS signal
effectively and that signal can be collected, processed and
analyzed.
