Self - is a concept or belief that an
individual has of him or herself as
emotional, spiritual, and social being.

- Idea of who I am, kind of like a self-


reflection of one’s well being,
anything about yourself.

Real Self – who I am


Ideal self – who I want to be
Self Understanding
– understanding of who they are , what
makes them unique.
- Knowing what motivates his or her
actions ( Physical self, social self,
competent self and the inner or
psychological self).
Physical Self - refers to the tangible
aspect of the individual, the one
with figure and the one that can be
seen and touched or the one
that feels pain, vulnerable to
sickness.

Before the 18th Century, western philosophical views
of beauty treated as an objective quality
1.St. Augustine – things were beautiful because it gave
delight or whether it gave delight because it is
beautiful.
2.Plato – he connected beauty as a response to love and
desire.
3.Aristotle – asserted that chief forms of beauty are
order, symmetry and definiteness
By the 18th century, beauty was associated with pleasure as a
personal preference
1. David Hume – it merely exists in “ Beauty is no quality in things
themselves” the mind which contemplates them and each
perceives a different beauty.
2. Immanuel Kant – the judgment of taste is therefore not judgement or
cognition and is consequently not logical but aesthetical , by which
we understand that whose determining ground can be no other than
subjective.
3. Francis Hutcheson – “ the perception of beauty does not depend on
the external sense of sight, however the internal sense of beauty
operates as an internal or reflect of sense”
The role of Culture in our
understanding of Body
Image and Self Esteem
Culture – defined as the shared
patterns of thoughts, beliefs,
behavior and habits in both
material and symbolic realms.
2 Types of Beauty
1.Inner beauty – refers to the
inner qualities of the person
2.External beauty – physical
characteristics of the person.
Pop Culture
Popular Culture from a common
understanding is a culture widley
accepted and patronized by the public
as in pop music which is very
appealing to the youth.
Self Esteem – is used
to describe a peron’s
overall sense of self
worth or personal
value.
Developing Self – esteem
a.Understanding that healthy, attractive bodies caome
in many shapes and sizes.
b.Physical appearance says very little about our
character or value as a person
c.How we get to this point of acceptance often
depends on our individual development and self
acceptance
Recognizing and Personifying Physical Self
1.Allow your physical self to move and express himself. Dance,
walk, and stretch.
2.Notice all the physical things around you. Use all five senses:
sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell.
3.Love your body
4.Feed your physical body what it likes.
5.When you are sitting quietly or running energy,visualize your
body standing in front of you.
6.Open your grounding line and leg channels about 10% more
and run extra Earth Energy through them.
Sexual Self
- how one thinks about himself/
herself as a sexual individual. Sexual
self speaks of your sexual
health, sexual orientation, gender
identity and expression and values
around your sexuality.
Sexual Development –
is a lifelong process that
starts at the moment of
conception.
HUMAN SEXUALITY
Sexuality is much more then sexual
feelings or sexual intercourse. It is
an important part of a person who
is and what she/he will become.
The Five Circles of Sexuality
1. Sensuality – is awareness and feeling about your own body and other
people’s bodies, especially the body of a sexual partner.
2. Sexual Intimacy – is the ability to be emotionally close to another
human being and to accept closeness in return.
3. Sexual Identity – is a person’s understanding of who he/she is
sexually, including the sense of being male or being a female.
4. Reproduction and Sexual Health – these are persons capacity to
reproduce and the behaviors and attitudes that make sexual
relationships healthy and enjoyable.
5. Sexualization – is the aspect of sexuality in whch people behave
sexually to influence, manipulate , or control other people.
LUST – this is a phase which is driven by the sex hormones testosterone
and estrogen- in both men and women

ATTRACTION – this phase is said to be one of the beautiful moments


of life. This is the phase when a person actually starts to feel the love.

ATTACHMENT – is a bond helping the couple to take their relationship


to advance levels. It instigates the feeling of bearing children and falling in
love with them wholeheartedly.
Emotional Self – is the ability to respond to
the ongoing demands of experience with
the range of emotions in a manner that is
socially tolerable and sufficiently flexible to
permit spontaneous reactions as well as the
ability delay spontaneous reactions as
needed.
Emotional Regulation
– is a complex process that
involves initiating, inhabiting or
modulating one’s state or
behavior in a given situation.
Classification of Emotions

1.That emotions are discrete and


fundamentally different constructs

Emotional expressions – are
observable verbal and nonverbal
behaviors that communicate an
internal emotional or affective
state.
Modal Model of Emotion
1.Situation – the sequence begins with a situation (real
or imagined) that is emotionally relevant.
2.Attention – is directed towards the emotional situation.
3.Appraisal – the emotional situation is evaluated and
interpreted.
4.Response – an emotional response is generated, giving
rise to loosely coordinated changes in experiential,
behavioral and physiological response systems.

Emotional Intelligence – the
capacity to be aware of, control,
and express one’s emotions, and
to handle interpersonal
relationships judiciously and
empathetically.

individuals ability to
differentiate between the
specifity of their emotions
