Introduction
For huge or large construction projects;
• Large and enormous equipment will be needed.
• Proper use of the appropriate equipment contributes to
economy, quality, safety, speed and timely completion of a
project.
• Such equipment are used for highway projects, irrigation,
buildings, power projects and etc.
• 15-30% of the total project cost has been accounted
towards equipment and machinery.

Classification of Construction Equipment

1. Excavating and Earth moving equipment:

 Power shovel- to excavate the earth and to load the trucks and is capable of excavating all types of
earth except rock.

1. Excavating and Earth moving equipment:

 Back hoe- also known as hoe, back shovel and pull shovel and is used to excavate below the natural
surface on which it rests. Generally used to excavate trenchers, pits for basement and also grading
works which requires precise control of depths.

1. Excavating and Earth moving equipment:

 Drag line- has a prominent operation of dragging the bucket against the material to be dugged out.
This equipment can dig and dump over larger distances and are very useful for digging below its
track level and handling softer materials.

.
Classification of Construction Equipment

1. Excavating and Earth moving equipment:

 Clam shell- is named due to the resemblance of its bucket to a clam which is like a shell-fish with
hinged double shell. Its front end is essentially a crane boom with a specially designed bucket
loosely attached at the end through the cables in a drag line.
