Introduction

• What is HAN (Human Area Network)?

• Human area network as the name suggest, it is the concept of using human
body as a network for communication [1]

Introduction

Fig.2 Human Area Network [1]

Limitations of HAN
• The operating range through the body was limited to few tens of
centimeters.
• The top communication speed was only 40 bit/sec.[1]

These limitations were overcome by NTT

• By using photonic electric fiels sensors. Which give rise to the new
technology called Red Tacton.[1]
Literature review
• Introduction to Red Tacton
• “Touch-act-on” meaning “action triggered by touching”.
• Red Tacton is a new human area networking technology that uses the
surface of the human body as a safe, high speed network transmission path.
• Red Tacton uses the minute electric field generated by human body as
medium for transmitting the data [2]

Literature review
Electro optic sensor
• It can measure electric fields from a device without contacting it which
minimises measurment disturbances
• It supports one-point contact measurement that is independent of the
ground, this feature is utilized by NTT for fabricating an intrabody
communication receiver for HAN technology [3]

NTT (Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation)

• It is a telecommunication company located in Tokyo, Japan.
• Ranked 55th in Fortune Global 500.[4]
Objective and approach
Objectives
• To increase the data tranfer rate.
• To reduce loss of data during transmission.
• To reduce power consumption.[5]

Approach
• To utilize the electric field that surrounds the human body which can be use
for transmission.[5]
Description of work
Working mechanism of Red Tacton
• The Red Tacton transmitter induces a weak electric field on the surface of
the body
• The Red Tacton receiver senses the changes in the weak electric field on the
surface of the body caused by the transmitter
• It relies on the principle of optical properties of electro optic sensor [3]

Fig. 4 Working of Red Tacton

System safety
• No current flows into human body from Red Tacton devices. It uses natural
occuring electric field.
• It is in conformity to the “Radio exposure protection” standard (ARIB STD-
38) [5]

Radio frequency-exposure protection guidelines

Electric field intensity – less than 82.4 V/m
Displacement current – less than 45 mA at a
frequency of 10MHz
Features and Applications
Three main fucntional feature
• Touch- communication with just a touch or a step
• Any-media – works with many transmission media common in human life
• Broadband and interactive – bandwidth doesn’t deteriorate even with duplex
operations and simultaneously access by many user.

Applications
• One to one service
• Intuitive operations
• Personalizations
• Security applications
• Medical applications

Obstacles

• As there are other similar technologies like bluetooth and other radio
operated technologies etc.

• It is comparatively expensive

• This technology will not likely to be very useful until a large number of
people and devices have adopted it which means a significant time
investment
Conclusion

• We can say that Red Tacton is the best technology in comparison to other
data communication technologies present today.

• It also reduces the problem of hacking as our body itself is media.

• It reduce data loss and security is strong.

• Todays main issue is speed and it is solved by Red Tacton by giving a very
high speed of transmission about 10Mbps in short distance.
