SUSTAINABLE DRAINAGE
• A concept that focus on the environment and people.
• They provide a sustainable solution to flooding.
• Increases the water quality and enhancing the amenity and
biodiversity of the environment.
• Lower the water flow rates, increase water storage capacity and
reduce the transport of pollution to the water environment.
• Designed to meet the environmental challenges such as climate
change and population.

2
TYPES OF SUDS

• Source control: measures deal with run-off at, or close to

the surface where rainfall lands.
eg: permeable pavements
• Site control: deals with smaller catchment area
eg: filter drains
• Regional control:deals with larger catchments and site
controls
eg: wetlands

3
SUDS TECHNIQUES

GREEN ROOF
• Helps in significant reduction in stormwater runoff.

• Planted over a water proofing medium

Layers of a typical green roof

• Bottom layer: Roof deck, insulation and waterproofing

• Protection and storage layer

• Drainage and capilarity layer

• Root permeable filter layer

• Extensive growing media

• Top layer: Plants, vegetation

4
PERMEABLE PAVEMENT

• Pavements having open spaces in structure

• It can be used for roads, parking , courtyards etc

• It may be gravel, concrete or plastic webbing

Advantages
• Discharge of storm water pollutant to surface water is
reduced
• Reduced storm water discharge volume and rate

• Reduced temperature

5
Impermeable pavement Permeable pavement
• Made of concreate, • Have uneven edges that
compacted together using create gaps between the
sand blocks
• These area do not allow • Allow water to flow throgh
water to infiltrate them and into the ground
water

6
FILTER DRAINS

• It its a trench lined with geotextile and filled

with gravel
• Water is led into it using pipe system
• Filter the trapping segiments and organic matter

7
DETENSION BASIN
• Designed to holt the tunoff water for a few hours to settle
the solids
• The entire contents of the basins are drained down
• They have a low level outlet orifice
• Performance can be enhanced by providing small pools
at the inlet and out let

8
WETLANDS

• Enhancement of the retension ponds.

• Greater degree of filtering by algae and lesser by
plants.
• Provides additional green areas and interesting
water features.

9
CASE STUDY-GROVELANDS PARK
WETLAND,ENFIELD

• Project was undertaken as a part of salmons

brook Healthy River challenge
• Main SUDS components used are wetland and
swales
• Improved water quality and provided a new
habitat feature

10
ADVANTAGES OF SUDS
• Positive environmental impacts
• Aesthetically pleasing
• Filters pollutants
• Restores ground water storage
• Prevents sewage overflows
• Reduces downstream flooding
• reduced flooding risks
• increases infiltration rates
• postively impacts aquatic ecosystems
• minimises public and environmental impacts as a result of
decreased pollutants
• Positive impact on housing saleability and increase property 11
values.
DISADVANTAGES

• Initially expensive to contruct SuDS

• May cause pressures to highway maintenance systems.
