• Banda Neira was once the center of the world's nutmeg
and mace trade, because Kep. Banda was the only source of
high-value spices until the mid-19th century. The modern
city was founded by members of the VOC, who
slaughtered the population of Banda to get its hammer in
1621 and brought the rest to Batavia (now Jakarta) to be
made slaves.

• The island is also famous as a place of disposal of political

prisoners during the Dutch East Indies Colonial
Government. Some national struggle figures who have
experienced living on this island include Mohammad Hatta,
Sutan Syahrir, and Cipto Mangunkusumo. In 2016, the
house where Sutan Syahrir and Mohammad Hatta lived was
turned into a museum while the Cipto Mangkusumo house
was left empty.
