Hypertension generally attacks the elderly.
The increasing of blood pressure in the elderly
can be caused by the aging process that
occurs; it means the elasticity of blood vessels
decreases. There are two types of treatment
for hypertension patients, namely
pharmacology with anti-hypertension drugs
and non-pharmacology, such as 6MWD
therapy (6 Minute Walk Distance), elderly
gymnastics, massages.
• According to American Thoracic Society (2012)
6MWD is a therapy that can be done by patients
and does not require maximum energy. This
therapy measures the walking distance of the
patient within 6 minutes (6MWD). Walking is an
activity carried out every day by the patient. This
exercise evaluates systems that are involved in
training, including the pulmonary and
cardiovascular systems, circulatory systems,
peripheral circulation, blood, neuromuscular
units, and muscle metabolism
Research Method
• Research design
This study used quasy experimental design with a
pre-test and post-test research design that allows
comparing the results of the interventions that
have been done
• Sample population
The population in this study was elderly at
nursing home Semarang who suffered from
hypertension, amounting to 45 people. Sampling
technique used Non Probability Sampling method
with the Purposive Sampling technique
Research Method
• Research Instrument
The instrument used in this study was to use
the observation sheet. The tool used to
measure blood pressure was a spring
sphygmomanometer and a stethoscope.
Before the tools are used, the tool would be
calibrated in advance so that the data
obtained is valid and reliable.
Data Collection
1. Selecting 15 people by approaching local nurses
and elredly in Pucang Gading Nursing Home.
2. Delivered inform consent.
3. Conducting an interview with the research
subject using the assessment list.
4. Conducting a study and measurement of blood
pressure in the elderly at Pucang Gading
Semarang Nursing Home as long as 10 minutes
before 6MWD therapy (6 Minute Walk
Distance). At the first meeting was as a pre test
and the sixth meeting was as a post test.
Data Collection
5. All data obtained are demographic data, and then
the data was tabulated, the data is entered in the
frequency distribution table and interpreted.
6. conducting difference test to see the effect of
gymnastics on the elderly with hypertension with
a significance level / error of 5 percent (0.05).
7. the normality of the data used Kolmogorov-
Smirnov test.

The results showed that systolic blood
pressure after 6MWD therapy was 125.33
mmHg with the highest systolic blood
pressure 140 mmHg and the lowest 120
mmHg. Diastolic blood pressure after 6MWD
therapy was 83.33 mmHg with the highest
systolic blood pressure 90 mmHg and the
lowest 70 mmHg. After 6MWD therapy, these
results illustrate that most elderly people
experience a decrease in blood pressure
Discussion
• This is in accordance with Melissa's (2013)
theory that exercise affects the occurrence of
hypertension. The benefits of exercise to
improve the work and function of the heart,
lungs and blood vessels are characterized by a
decreased pulse rate, reduced lactic acid
buildup, increased HDL cholesterol, and
reduced atherosclerosis.
• Decreased blood pressure is affected by
various things such as reducing sodium
(sodium) intake, eating enough Calium and
Calcium from diet, reducing stress, avoiding
smoking, massage, 6MWD therapy (Hastjarjo,
2008)
Conclusion
• The results of identification of elderly blood pressure
before 6MWD therapy obtained an average systolic blood
pressure of 150 mmHg and an average diastolic blood
pressure of 94.67 mmHg. The results of the identification of
blood pressure after the elderly gymnastics were carried
out to obtain an average systolic blood pressure of 125.33
mmHg and an average diastolic blood pressure of 83.33
mmHg. It obtained a decrease in the average systolic blood
pressure of 24.67 mmHg and a decrease in diastolic blood
pressure of 11.34 mmHg. Giving 6MWD therapy has a
significant effect on the decrease in systolic blood pressure
in the elderly with hypertension, namely the value of p
(0,000) <0.05 and diastolic blood pressure in the elderly
with hypertension, p (0.000) <0.05.
Suggestion
By knowing the effect of 6MWD therapy on
blood pressure reduction in the elderly with
hypertension, nurses are expected to be able
to apply 6MWD therapy (6 Minute Walk
Distance) so that it can be used in homes and
to accompany routine elderly gymnastic
activities that have been carried out in
handling blood pressure increases
