What If’s and High Fives
When asked to sum up my personal educational philosophy in just a few words,
it has to be “What If?” and “High Fives!” As a soon-to-be professional
educator, I want to create a learning environment where there are a lot what-if

questions about the topic we are studying and even more high fives exchanged under CC BY-NC-ND
• Be the professional that I am educated and trained to be in a profession I choose and love
to be in, always trying to better my own skills and relationships;
• Recognize that all students are able to learn and support multiple teaching and learning
styles, methods, disciplines while embracing new theories, technologies and realities of
modern-day life;
• Help students to look beyond the topic for historical context, current day relationship and
future possibilities – to help them understand why the topic is important to them;
• Create engaging lesson plans that help students use their talents and develop new skills
and areas of interest to make them life-long learners;

Educational Philosophy
The role of our students …
• Come to class each day with a positive attitude and an open mind…not always easy and not always achievable 100%
of the time, but something they can practice and adopt;
• Be honest with me when they are not able to have a positive attitude or an open mind … and what can we do about it?
• Respect me, their families/caregivers, administration, community members and each other;
• Pay attention, participate, complete assignments, understand consequences for poor performance and/or behavior;
• Know that if they are having any difficulties with any of the information, topics or assignments, that they should let
me know. I am not a mind reader, and I cannot fix everything, but I will do all I can to help;
• Know that I care and that others care so that they can focus on succeeding;
• Think creatively, ask those what if questions and make real-world connections to what they are learning;
• Celebrate our individual and collective successes with those high fives.

The role of our families and caregivers …
• Support the education of your student by giving them positive messaging and encouragement about
their daily learnings and assignments;
• Address your student’s lack of success in a way that seeks to identify the root cause and find
solutions to move forward – for example, does your student need tutoring? Does your student have a
time and space to do homework? What other pressures and obligations does your student have?
• Let’s work together … we are on the same team … we have the same goal … we want your student to
succeed, so let’s talk to each other and create an environment and support system to show your
student that we are his or her biggest cheerleaders;
• Let the school and me know if there are any circumstances (within privacy limits of course) that could
impact your student’s ability to learn – whether short term or long term, emotional, social or physical –
so that we can work together to find solutions that work.

The role of our community …
• Just as our schools strive to help students become upstanding community members, our
students need the community to support them;
• Whether it is through clubs and events, political and financial support, or even volunteering, our
community needs to believe that all students can achieve and that our schools are a safe,
nurturing environment;
• Community members can give time, money and/or experience to help make our schools the best
places for learning;
• We need to update our standards, recognize new ways of teaching, connect resources, ask the
“what if” questions and yes, give each other the high-five when our students succeed.
