Preparations for Traffic Statistic Analysis
 Having a knowledge of the parameters and network setting of GPRS network,
including:
 Data configuration of PCU, PDCH configuration of cells, and the distribution of the traffic
volume of data services
 Having a knowledge of the structure of GSM network, especially the network parameter setting
related to GPRS and the traffic volume of GSM voice services
 When locating fault, it is required to analyze the traffic statistic data of a/some
separate measurement period (s)
 In most cases, traffic statistic data reflects the action of MS and the operation state of
the network in macroscopical view.
 The difference between BSC and PCU is that the traffic statistic results of PCU cannot
be browsed directly in offline mode though they are also stored in the harddisk.

Analysis of BSC Overall Performance Data
Analysis of LAPD link quality on PB interface
 PB interface is a signaling interface between PCU and BSC.

 As PCU is a half-separate equipment and it can connect multiple BSCs,

transmission equipment and even long-distance transmission equipment is
needed between PCU and BSC.
 Transmission quality of PB interface and the basic conditions can be known by
analyzing LAPD traffic statistic data.
 The main LAPD traffic statistic data needing to be analyzed is as follows:
 Times for sending SABM frame (Link establishment)
 Times for receiving UA frame (Link establishment response)
 Times for sending I frame
 Times for receiving I frame
 Number of I frame bytes sent
 Number of I frame bytes received
 Times for retransmitting I frame message
 Times for downlink message queue overflow

Analysis of BSC Overall Performance Data
 Access performance KPI analysis
 As the access flow of MS in GPRS system is different with that in GSM system, the access
performance in GPRS system is represented by TBF establishment success rate.
 TBF establishment success rate is affected by such aspects as data configuration, network
capacity, channel quality and how busy circuit switched services and packet switched
services are. The main related traffic statistic items are as follows:
[Uplink TBF establishment attempts] [Successful uplink TBF establishments]
[Downlink TBF establishment attempts] [Successful downlink TBF establishments]
 The definition of TBF establishment success rate:

Successful uplink TBF establishments

Uplink TBF establishment success rate =
Uplink TBF establishment attempts

Successful downlink TBF establishments

Downlink TBF establishment success rate =
Downlink TBF establishment attempts

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. HUAWEI Confidential Page 24

Analysis of BSC Overall Performance Data

 As no careful network optimization is performed according to packet services in GPRS

system, TBF establishment success rate in GPRS system is usually lower than that in
GSM system.
 As GPRS flow is different with other flows (In GPRS flow, assignment message is
retransmitted again and again), assignment failures have small effect on the services of
MS and the resource utilization. As a result, a little higher TBF establishment failure rate
is acceptable in GPRS system.
 If TBF establishment failure rate is high, it is necessary to check the cell traffic statistic
data in suspicious time segments. In most cases, you can find the few cells where very
high TBF establishment failure rate exists. By analyzing the exact cell where high
congestion rate exists, you can find the exact reason why high congestion rate exists
and then take corresponding actions. As to how to solve this problem, you can refer to
Check of Cell Access Performance KPI.

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. HUAWEI Confidential Page 25

Analysis of BSC Overall Performance Data

 Analysis of retainability performance KPI

 The analysis of BSC-level retainability performance KPI mainly aims to analyze

the call drop rate of the network.
 The main traffic statistic items are as follows:
[Successful uplink TBF establishments] [Abnormal uplink TBF releases]
[Successful downlink TBF establishments] [Abnormal downlink TBF releases]
 The definition for call drop rate:
Abnormal uplink TBF releases
Uplink TBF call drop rate =
Successful uplink TBF establishments

Abnormal downlink TBF releases

Downlink TBF call drop rate =
Successful downlink TBF establishments

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. HUAWEI Confidential Page 26

Analysis of BSC Overall Performance Data

 At present, as cell handover is unavailable in GPRS network and cell reselection are
all performed by the MS automatically, call drops will be inevitable when cell
reselection happens during the transmission.
 As TBF transmission needs short time (2 to 3 seconds on average), a higher call drop
rate (compared to GSM voice system) has small effect on services.
 As with congestion rate, if the call drop rate is high, it is necessary to check the traffic
statistic data in cells during suspicious time segments. After finding the few cells where
the call drop rate is obviously abnormal, analyze the few cells and find the exact
reasons and then solve the problem. As to how to solve the problem, you can refer to
Check of cell retainability performance.

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. HUAWEI Confidential Page 27

Analysis of BSC Overall Performance Data
 Analysis of resource utilization KPI
 The analysis of resource utilization KPI mainly analyzes the data of PDCH channels and whether
the system is overloaded.
 Related PDCH traffic statistic indexes are as follows:
[Average number of available PDCHs] Reference value: ≤100
[Average number of occupied PDCHs] Reference value: ≤80
 PDCHs include dynamic PDCHs and fixed PDCHs. A PB board of PCU can support 120 available
PDCHs at most (The number of maximum available PDCHs may increase if the system uses the
function of EDGE)
 As traffic statistic data is average value, the number of the maximum available PDCHs may exceed
120 when the average number of available PDCHs exceeds 100. In this case, the services in some
cells will be affected, so it is required to check the average number of occupied PDCHs first. If few
PDCHs are occupied, the fact may be that the actual traffic volume is not so high and the probable
reason for too large average number of available PDCHs is that too many fixed PDCHs are
configured and it causes low channel utilization. In this case, it is required to select some cells to
configure fewer fixed channels. If many PDCHs are occupied, the actual traffic volume is really
high. In this case, it is recommended that the operator should expand the network capacity.

Analysis of Cell-Level Traffic Statistic

 The analysis of cell-level performance mainly refers to the check of

cell-level traffic statistic data according to KPI. For details, it is
required to check the KPI of the following four aspects:
 Transmission performance
 Access performance
 Resource utilization performance
 Retainability performance

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. HUAWEI Confidential Page 29

Analysis of Cell-Level Traffic Statistic
Check of transmission performance KPI
 Cell transmission link refers to the whole transmission path from the MS to GPRS core network. It includes
Um interface, G-Abis interface, Pb interface, and Gb interface.
 Analysis of Um interface
 Abnormity rate of N3101, N3103, and N3105
 Retransmission rate of uplink/downlink RLC data block and times for the rise/drop of CS coding
− Generally speaking, the retransmission rate of data blocks rises with the rise of the data coding
mode.
− If the retransmission rate of data blocks is too high, it is recommended to check whether the data
coding mode is CS-1. If not, the too high retransmission rate may be caused by unreasonable
setting of conversion threshold for coding mode.
− If the retransmission rate of CS-1 data block is also too high, the problem probably exist at radio
interface and the common reason is interference.
 The statistic value of Number of RADIO STATUS PDUs Sent at Gb interface can also reflect the
transmission quality at radio interface in the cell.
− When the MS is beyond the radio coverage or continuous communication is unavailable because
of too poor quality of radio channels, PCU will send RADIO-STATUS PDU to SGSN.

 Analysis of G-Abis interface

 G-Abis interface is an interface between PCU and BTS and the traffic statistic
indexes related to G-Abis interface are cell-level traffic statistic indexes.
 This interface is mainly used for analyzing the transmission quality on link layer.
 The main traffic statistic indexes are as follows:
− Number of normal frames received
− Number of lost synchronization frames received
− Number of checking error frames received
− Number of effective frames sent
− Number of blank frames sent
 Checking error frames are to calculate errors after the synchronization of channels
and it reflects the quality of links directly. The formula is as follows:
Number of checking error frames received
G-Abis error frame rate = <=0.05%
Number of normal frames received

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. HUAWEI Confidential Page 31

Analysis of Cell-Level Traffic Statistic
Check of access performance KPI
 This check is mainly to analyze the establishment of uplink/downlink TBF

 Usually, TBF establishment success rate is used to describe the access

performance.

Analysis of Cell-Level Traffic Statistic
Check of access performance KPI
 The methods for analyzing why TBF establishment success rate is too low are as shown in the
following figure:

→ To remove hardware failures, you can check Cells with low establishment success rate
whether there are PCM-related alarms in BTS,
link failure alarms and PDCH lost
synchronization alarms in PCU. If PDCHs are
Alarm: Hardware failures
out of synchronization, check PCU, BSC, and
whether the link between BTS and BSC is
abnormal.
→ High packet traffic volume in the cell causes No packet resource Low assignment success rate
congestion.
→ Circuit switched service has high traffic volume

and it contends for dynamic channel resources
in the cell.
Reuse of MS Network congestion
→ The number of the channels that a board can
support reaches the upper threshold of the Analysis of packet traffic volume
specification.
→ The channels in the cell are in abnormal state, Channels contention
thus causing the unavailability of channels.
Out of synchronization of channels

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. HUAWEI Confidential Page 33

Analysis of Cell-Level Traffic Statistic
Check of access performance KPI
 Check Number of UL/DL TBF establishment failures due to no channel, if these two indexes are
high, possible reasons are as follows:
 High packet traffic volume causes congestion.
 The user blocks channels manually, thus causing difficulty for the access of MS.
 If no channel is blocked, it is likely that the number of MSs that are permitted to access packet
channels in the cell is nearly saturated, thus causing difficulty for the access of MS.
 The collision of CCCH random access will also affect CCCH uplink assignment success rate. In
this case, Average Time Interval (s) for CCCH Packet Access Request can be used for the
analysis.
 The type and number of channels configured in the cell will also affect the statistic of
congestion rate greatly.
 In case of broad coverage, the number of cells configured on a RPPU [Pb] board of PCU may
be larger than 120 (120 is the number of PDCHs that a RPPU [Pb] can activate at most). When
the packet traffic of the local board is busy (The most obvious evidence is that the average
number of occupied PDCHs exceeds 100) while the cell is only configured dynamic PDCH but
no static PDCH, congestion may happen in the cell because of no channel.

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. HUAWEI Confidential Page 34

Analysis of Cell-Level Traffic Statistic
Check of access performance KPI
 Low assignment success rate causes high TBF establishment failure rate.
 Uplink/Downlink TBF Establishment Failures Caused by No Response From MS. Possible reasons are as
follows:
 The quality of transmission links is poor and the block error rate is high in the local cell. In this case,
you can raise TBF access success rate by adjusting the parameters (Such as T3168 and T3192) .
 Internal queues in the network congests because of high packet traffic volume and TBF establishment
fails because of too long assignment message delay. In this case, you can tune up the value of g-
N3101-Max and g-N3105-Max through software parameter table.
 If packet traffic volume is high and lasts long, and the problem is beyond the capability of network
optimization and adjustment, it is recommended that the operator should perform capacity expansion.

Analysis of Cell-Level Traffic Statistic
Check of resource utilization KPI
 Contention of packet services by circuit services can be known through analyzing PDCH
Resource Performance Measurement.
 In fact, the basic configuration of PDCHs in the current network is one static PDCH and two
dynamic PDCHs or all dynamic PDCHs. In this case, the recoveries of loaded dynamic
channels by BSC and the success rate for conversion from TCH to PDCH can better reflect
the contention of packet services by circuit services.
 The related formulas are as follows:

Mean number of occupied PDCHs

PDCH utilization rate =
Mean number of available PDCHs

Successful conversions from TCH to PDCH

Dynamic channel application success rate =
Attempted conversions from TCH to PDCH

Recoveries of loaded dynamic PDCHs by BSC

Recovery rate of loaded dynamic channels =
Recoveries of dynamic PDCHs by BSC

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. HUAWEI Confidential Page 36

Analysis of Cell-Level Traffic Statistic
Check of resource utilization KPI
 PDCH number and type configuration, and pdchpara table setting can affect resource utilization.
The related traffic statistic indexes are as follows:
[Average number of available PDCHs ] [Average number of occupied PDCHs]
[Time (s) for allocating all available PDCHs]
 If the cell is configured with fixed channels, Average number of available PDCHs should be
equal to the number of fixed channels configured in the cell, otherwise, the state of the cell is once
abnormal during the statistic period.
 If the cell is all configured with dynamic channels, you can judge whether there is the
application for dynamic channels from Average number of available PDCHs and Average number of
occupied PDCHs. If the two indexes are both near to 0, it shows that there is no data service in the
cell and you can verify this by referring to other traffic statistic indexes that are related to TBF.
 Through Average number of occupied PDCHs, you can see whether the packet traffic in the cell is
busy or idle. After that, we can adjust the type of channels configured according to the busy/idle
state of the cell. In details, configure more dynamic channels for idle cells and more fixed channels
for busy cells.
