Qualitative Research

and its Importance in Daily Life

Group 4, 11-Exactness
Learning Objectives

The student will be able to:

Identify the features of a Qualitative Research.
Describe the characteristics, strengths, weaknesses,
and kinds of qualitative research.
Illustrate the importance of qualitative research
across fields.
Qualitative
Research and its
characteristics

Sharyen O. Triana
"Qualitative research is a type of scientific research."
Qualitative Research Methods Overview (n.d)

"Qualitative research is multimethod in focus,

involving an interpretive, naturalistic approach to its
subject matter."
McLeod (2019)

In general terms, scientific research consists of an

investigation that:

• seeks answers to a question

• systematically uses a predefined set of procedures to
answer the question
• collects evidence
• produces findings that were not determined in
advance
• produces findings that are applicable beyond the
immediate boundaries of the study

Qualitative Research Methods Overview (n.d.)

Methods to obtain Qualitative Data

According to McLeod (2019)

Qualitative researchers use a variety of methods to
develop deep understandings of how people perceive
their social realities and in consequence, how they act
within the social world.
EXAMPLES:

• Diary accounts
• Open-minded questionnaires
• Documents
• Participant observation
• Ethnography

Interpreting Qualitative Research

Qualitative research is endlessly creative and

interpretive.
The interpretations of it are constructed, and various
techniques can be used to make sense of the data
EXAMPLES:

• Content analysis
• Grounded theory (Glaser &
Strauss, 1967)
• Thematic analysis (Braun &
Clarke, 2006)
• Discourse analysis

Importance of
Qualitative
Research

Goldah Z. Arante
Why Qualitative Research is important?

-Because most things cannot just be quantified: they

need to be described, explained.
-You can’t count everything.
David Benoun, 2018

It plays a vital role in answering

our doubts and queries in a certain matter.
Elizabeth Palasan, n.d.

Why Qualitative Research is important?

It provides an in-depth understanding of the ways

people come to understand, act and manage their
day-to-day situations in particular settings.
It helps us to understand more about “why” and
“how” something is happening (and sometimes
“what” is happening).
Qualitative research(2011)
Why Qualitative Research is important?

It helps on generating concepts, strategies, or for

example an appreciation of processes that govern
groups or institution.
Deborah Talbot, 2015
Why Qualitative Research is important?

It’s in a position to make a

unique contribution by elaborating the nature of
experience and meaning.
It has the ability to bring phenomena
to life using the explanation of context,
multiplicity of voices, and consideration of detail.
Qualitative research projects have triggered policy
changes that support more research and better care
for AIDS patients (Kazdin, 1998, p. 260), and the
advancement of treatment interventions that come
from a fuller understanding of lasting distress
experienced by victims of childhood abuse (Morrow &
Smith, 1995).

Kinds of
Qualitative
Research

Miguel T. Ladra
5 Kinds of Qualitative Research

According to Sauro (2015)

Ethnography Grounded theory
Case Study Phenomenological
 Narrative
Ethnography

According to Sauro (2015)

In Ethnographic studies, the researcher typically
gathers impressions and data from a broad
range of participants whose views are different.
Phenomenological

According to Sauro (2015)

Describing how any one participant experiences a
specific event is the goal of the
phenomenological method of research. This method
utilizes interviews, observation and surveys to gather
information from subjects.
Narrative

According to Leonard (2019)

The narrative model occurs over extended periods
of time, compiles information as it happens.
It takes subjects at a starting point,
reviews situations as obstacles or opportunities occur.
Grounded Theory

According to Leonard (2019)

The grounded theory method tries to explain
why a course of action evolved the
way it did. Grounded theory looks at
large subject numbers. Theoretical models are
developed based on existing data
Case Study

According to Sauro (2015)

A case study involves a deep understanding
through multiple types of data sources. Case
studies can be explanatory, exploratory, or describing
an event.
Strengths and
Weaknesses of
Qualitative
Research

Ian B. Urbina &

Franz B. Leuterio
• Basically, Its strengths is its capacity to give rich
information about the respondents.
• Provides in-depth information on individual cases.
• Relays subjects’ experiences and perspective in
unusual details.
• Allow flexibility in research-related processes.
• Enables data to be gathew in natural setting.
• Presents several options in the conduct of research.
It is important to choose the most
appropriate methods for what is being investigated.
Qualitative research is not appropriate to answer
every research question and researchers need to
think carefully about their objectives.
(Anderson, 2010)
Research quality is heavily dependent on the
individual skills of the researcher and more
easily influenced by the researcher's personal biases
and idiosyncrasies.
Rigor is more difficult to demonstrate.
(Anderson, 2010)
The volume of data makes analysis and
interpretation time consuming.
It is sometimes not as well understood
and accepted as quantitative research within the
scientific community
The researcher's presence during data gathering,
which is often unavoidable in qualitative research,
can affect the subjects' responses.
Issues of anonymity and confidentiality can present
problems when presenting findings
Findings can be more difficult and time
consuming to characterize in a visual way.
Replicating results can be very difficult with
qualitative research.
Unseen data can disappear during the qualitative
research process.
 Researchers must have industry-related expertise.
Qualitative research is not statistically representative.
