INTRODUCTION

• It is the technique of using heat given by an object to produce

an image of it or locate it.
• It is also known as ‘ Infrared Thermography ’.
• It is one of the most commonly used night vision technology.
• Works in environment without any ambient light
• Can penetrate obscurants such as smoke , fog and haze.
INFRARED RADIATION
• It is a region of electro-magnetic spectrum with
longer wavelength(700nm-1mm).
• It is Invisible to human eye but human can sense
it as heat.
• All objects emits some level of IR radiations.
• Sun and fire are most obvious sources.
HISTORY
• Astronomer William Herschel discovered infrared radiations
in early 19th centuary.
• In 1929, first infrared-sensitive electronic camera invented.
• In 2009,Thermography used by Govt. and airport personnel .
WORKING PRINCIPLE
• According to black body radiation law, thermography allows
to one’s environment with or without visible illumination.
• All objects emitts certain amount of black body radiation.
• The amount of radiation emitted by an object increases with
temperature.
• It works even in total darkness.
• A special camera detects infrared radiations known as
thermographic camera.
THERMOGRAPHIC CAMERA

• It is a device that forms the thermal image using infrared

radiations.
• Operate in wavelength as long as 14000nm.
THERMOGRAPHIC CAMERA(CONT.)
• Thermal images are normally gray scale in nature.
• Black objects are cold; white objects are hot.
• Some cameras uses colors to identify objects at
different temperature.
WORKING
APPLICATIONS
• Condition monitoring
• Night vision
• Non-destructive Testing
• Aircraft Inspection
• Concrete Inspection
• Electrical Thrmography
• Medical Imaging
• Volcanology and Geological surveys
• Military
ADVANTAGES
• It shows a visual picture that help to compare
temperatures over a large area.
• No illumination is needed.
• It is capable of catching moving targets in real time.
• Detect threats at long range.
• See through smoke and light fog.
• It is a non-destructive test method.
• It can be use to detect objects in dark areas.
DISADVANTAGES
• high price range.
• Images can be hard to interpret accurately.
• Can’t identify people.
• Ability to measure only surface areas.
CONCLUSION
• It deals with individuals to see what the naked
eye cannot. However, helping you to see even
when there is no light is the only use of thermal
imaging. By using special thermal cameras, this
technology offers lots of benefits ranging from
industrial advantages to security.
