 INTRODUCTION

Wind Energy is renewable and eco-friendly.

Conventional wind turbines are : Horizontal-
axis wind turbine(HAWT) and Vertical-axis
wind turbine(VAWT).
HAWT and VAWT have many challenges.
Technological advancement introduce new
wind energy harnessing method.
Vortex Bladeless Wind Turbine works on
Vortex Induced Vibrations.
BWT is environment-friendly, cost effective and
more efficient.
 VORTEX SHEDDING
Vortex shedding is an oscillating flow.
Developed when fluid flow past a bluff
body.
Von-Karman Vortex Street.
Vortex Induced Vibrations occur at
resonance.
 BLADELESS WIND TURBINE

 Vortex induced vibration resonant wind

generator.
 A cylinder fixed vertically with an elastic
rod.
 Oscillates with vortex induced vibration.
 Generates electricity through alternator
system.
 DESIGN OF BWT
MAST: Carbon fiber or glass fiber reinforced
polymer. Unconstrained and free to oscillate.
BASE: Carbon fiber reinforced polymer. Rigid
structure.
GENERATING SYSTEM: Linear Alternator or
Piezoelectric material.
TUNING MAGNETIC SYSTEM: Neodymium
magnet.
SPRING: Hardened steel.

 Generation of Electricity
Electricity can be generated in two ways:
• Using Piezoelectric material.
• Linear Generator.
Piezoelectric material are those solids which can accumulate
electric charge with resect to applied mechanical stress.
Linear generator works on the principleof electromagnetic induction, the
linear movement of magnet inside coil generates emf in the coil.
 GENERATION CAPACITY
 In wind energy conversion power generation is
proportional to swept area of wind turbine.
 BWT sweeps up as much as 30% of working area of a
conventional wind turbine of identical height.
 A single unit is less power efficient than regular HAWT.
 Smaller swept area allows more units to be installed in
the same area.
 Thus it compensate for power efficiency with space
efficiency incheaper way.
 TUNING MECHANISM
 The frequency of vortex shedding is proportional to
windstream’s velocity.
 Each structure have its own natural frequency
 To match wind frequency with device’s natural
frequency one should modify the mass and stiffness.
 BWT uses a magnetic confinement system with
permanent magnets.
 Magnets can increase the apparent stiffness of the
system according to the degree of flexion.
 It can automatically vary rigidity and synchronize with
the incoming wind speed.
 MAIN PROTOTYPES
 Basically there will be three main prototype to hit the
market.Vortex Atlantis (Micro power generation)
 Vortex Mini(Domestic or industrial generation)
 Vortex Gran(Large scale power generation)
Si N Name Height Weight Generation Tentative Capabilities
capacity Price
1 Vortex Atlantis 10 feet 10 kg 100 watts $250 Lightings and
(3m) (17,750 electronics.
INR)
2 Vortex Mini 42 feet 100 kg 4 kilo watts $5000 A village
(13m) (355,000
INR)
3 Vortex Gran 490 feet 100 tons 1 mega watts NA 400 Households
(150m)
 ADVANTAGES
 No gears and bearings, reduces manufacturing and
maintenance cost drastically.
 No lubricants needed, noise less, more environmental
friendly.
 It reduces foundation at the bottom by 50%.
 Cost of energy production is 40% less than the
conventional turbines.
 No harm to birds.
 Installation density is higher as they occuy less area.
 DISADVANTAGES

The efficiency of the energy absorbed from the wind is

comparatively less than that of the conventional wind
turbine.
Wind energy is less predictable.
Height of mast has to increased based on the output r
equired.
Vulnerable to storm.
 APPLICATIONS
Harnessing the wind energy even in places with low
wind speeds..
Industries
Residential areas
Farms
Schools
Off-grid Lighting
 CONCLUSION

Wind energy is clean and reliable in terms of sustainable alternatives

The generation of electricity is made possible by small structure of bladeless
turbine.
This technology will satisfy need of continuous need of energy.
Tap wind energy with low seed as 3kmph.
The overall project use less space hence highly economical for the rural
electrification of India.
