BANDURA’S

SOCIAL COGNITIVE
THEORY
ALBERT BANDURA
Canadian-American
psychologist proponent

ORIGINAL THEORY: SOCIAL

LEARNING THEORY
(1960’s)

CORE CLAIM: BEHAVIOR

CAN BE LEARNED BY
OBSERVATION.
BOBO DOLL EXPERIMENT
O Experiment
conducted by
Bandura to support
his theory.

O 72 children (3-6 y/o)

grouped into 3 by
sex.
1961 (Live Model)
 An adult/model who physically and verbally
attacked the bobo doll
 2nd group (non aggressive group)

 An adult/model ignored the bobo doll and

played with the other toys in the room
 3rd group (control group)

 No model
 1st group (aggressive group)
Result:
O Aggressive model >more aggressive model

O Non-aggressive model >non-imitative or less

aggressive model

PHYSICALLY AGGRESSIVE RESPONSES ARE

IMITATED BY BOYS MORE THAN GIRLS.
1963 (TELEVISED MODEL)

O Same method done from the first experiment.

Punishment
O With the use of motivation
Reward
MAJOR CONCEPTS OF
SOCIAL LEARNING THEORY
Observational Learning
O We can learn from two ways:

O a) Enactive Learning
- learning by doing
- direct experience

O b) Vicarious Learning
- learning through observation
FOUR PROCESS THAT INFLUENCE
OBSERVATIONAL LEARNING
1. Attention
- paying attention to the model
- noticing the behavior
2. Retention
- memory
- how well the behavior is remembered
- remembers/retains what was noticed
3. Reproduction
- to physically reproduce the skill
- the ability to perform the behavior that the model had
demonstrate
4. Motivation
- the will to perform a certain behavior
- you have to be motivated to copy a behavior, otherwise
you’ll stop practicing it eventually forget it.
TRIADIC RECIPROCAL DETERMINISM

BEHAVIOR

ENVIRONMENT PERSONAL FACTORS

-Also known as TRIADIC RECIPROCAL CAUSATION

-A person’s behavior is both influenced by or

influences his/her personal factors and environment.
SELF-EFFICACY
- Belief in one’s ability to succeed in specific
situations or accomplish a task.

- Plays a major role on how we are motivated to

reach our goals or approach challenge
SOURCES OF SELF-EFFICACY
1. Performance Accomplishment/Mastery Experiences
- Previous successes raise mastery expectations while repeated
failures lower them.

2. Vicarious Experience
- Gained by observing others perform activities successfully
- Often referred to as modeling

3. Social Persuasion/Verbal persuasion

- Influential people in our lives can strengthen our beliefs that
we can cope successfully with specific tasks

4. Physiological and Emotional State

- The individuals physiological and emotional state influences self-
efficacy judgement with regards to specific tasks, ex. Anxiety,
physical, incapability, anger and etc.
“Your Beliefs become your
Thoughts,
Your Thoughts become your
Words,
Your Words become your Actions,
Your Actions become your Habits,
Your Habits become your Values,
Your Values become your Destiny.”
