 FIRST YEARS

Joanne Rowling is the daughter of Peter James Rowling, an aviation engineer

from Rolls-Royce, and Anne Rowling . He was born on July 31, 1965 in the
town of Yate, United Kingdom. One of his maternal great-grandparents, Dugald
Campbell, was Scottish and his mother's paternal grandfather, Louis Volant, was
French, and was awarded the Croix de Guerre for his exceptional bravery in
defending the village of Courcelles-le-Comte during the First World War. His
sister, Dianne, was born at home a month before Joanne was 2 years old. The
family moved to the nearby village of Winterbourne 2 years later
• As a child, Joanne used to write fantasy stories that she often read to
her sister. As a young teenager, her great aunt gave her a copy of
Jessica Mitford's autobiography, "Hons and Rebels." The author
became Joanne's heroine, who ended up reading all her books; that
marked the fact of a childhood and youth very linked to literature
that would be reflected in their future.

• Rowling has said that her teenage years were unhappy. His home life
was complicated by his mother's illness: multiple sclerosis, and a tense
relationship with his father, with whom he did not speak. her best
friend at that time, she owned a turquoise Ford Anglia that, according
to her, inspired a flying version that would appear in her book "Harry
Potter and the Chamber of Secrets". Like many teenagers, he became
interested in pop music, listened to The Clash, Smiths and Siouxsie
Sioux and adopted the latter's appearance: with his hair combed back
and his eyes painted with black eyeliner; a look I would still have
when I started university.
 EDUCATION
• He attended St Michael's Primary School, a
school founded by abolitionist William
Wilberforce and reformer Hannah More. Its
director, Alfred Dunn, has also been
suggested as the inspiration for the director
of the Hogwarts School of Magic and
Sorcery, Albus Dumbledore. She attended
high school at Wyedean School and College,
where her mother worked in the science
department.
• In 1982, Joanne presented entrance exams
to the University of Oxford, but was not
accepted and went to the University of
Exeter. Martin Sorrell, a French teacher in
Exeter, remembers her as "a discreetly
competent student, with a denim jacket and
dark hair, which, in academic terms, gave the
appearance of doing what was necessary".
Rowling admits that she preferred to read
Dickens and Tolkien than to do their
university duties. After a year of study in
Paris, Rowling graduated from Exeter in
1986.
 NEW MARRIAGE AND
FAMILY
• On December 26, 2001, Rowling married
Neil Murray, in a private ceremony that did
not have much ostentation and that took
place in her house, near Aberfeldy. The
couple has had two children to date, David
Gordon Rowling Murray, who was born on
March 24, 2003, and Mackenzie Jean Rowling
Murray, who was born on January 23, 2005.
