explain the interactions of atoms and molecules both
conceptually and mathematically?

Start with Oxygen, if it is not there

balance the biggest molecule
Let’s do one together

C3H8+ O 2 H2O +CO2

C=3 C=1
H=8 H=2
O=2 O=3
1. Save hydrogen and Oxygen for last
2. Start with Carbon
So there are three on one side so what has to be on the other side?
There are 8 Hydrogen on one side so what has to be on the other to make the 2 into an
8?
Count up the oxygen on the product side and balance the oxygen on the reactants side
Answer to Practice Problem

C3H8+5O2 4H2O +3CO2

C=3 C=3
H=8 H=8
O=10 O=10

Chemical Reactions Classification

1. Synthesis (combination)-multiple reactants combine to make a single

product
2. Decomposition- Breakdown of single entity into two or more fragments
3. Single Displacement- reaction where one element replaces another element
4. Double Displacement- Exchange of bonds between two non-reacting
chemical species
5. Combustion- “burning”, it occurs when a hydrocarbon reacts with oxygen to
produce CO2 and water
