• AFTERMATH
Public outrage against the shootings became a catalyst for the Indonesian riots of May 1998, which included
a pogrom against Chinese-Indonesians. About 1,200 people were killed, mostly trapped inside buildings that
were set alight. As a result of the riots and similar ones nationwide, President Suharto resigned on 21 May
1998.
• INVESTIGATION
In November 2000, it was announced that the police summoned for questioning the eleven officers suspected
of involvement by military police. By year's end, however, none of the suspects had been questioned.
The Indonesian National Commission on Human Rights (Indonesian: Komisi Nasional Hak Asasi Manusia)
reopened the investigation in 2008 and submitted their findings to the Indonesian Attorney General's Office.
The Attorney General's Office declared the investigation complete and returned all documentation.
As of May 2011, the Indonesian government has not closed the investigation into the events or PUNISHED
ANY OF THOSE RESPONSIBLE,even though there have been demonstrations, rallies, and calls for
expedition in 2008, 2010,and 2011. The Deputy Attorney General of Indonesia, Darmono, has promised to
investigate the incident further.

Trisakti tragedy related to human rights

• In accordance with the 1945 Constitution Article 28A which reads:

"Everyone has the right to live and has the right to defend his life and life."

In Article 28A it is clearly explained that the article guarantees a person's right to life.
However, in the 1998 Trisakti Tragedy case, members of the police and military involved in
the case had taken away the living rights of Trisakti University students by stepping on,
beating, and brutally firing students.

OUR SOLUTION FOR TRISAKTI TRAGEDY

• First, the government, through the National Commission on Human Rights
• Secondly, if it turns out that Komnas HAM and the government are unable to uphold
human rights in Indonesia
• Third, respecting the human rights of Indonesian citizens, by making the most of our
rights to live upheld
• Fourth, the government in charge must enforce / confirm the applicable laws relating
to guaranteeing human rights in Indonesia
