METHODOLOGY

Methods or Methodology
◦The methods or the methodology portion
provides a detailed description of how the
study was conducted; Justifications of
choices (e.g. Participants, instruments, etc)
should be provided. This portion is written in
the future tense.
1. Research Design

◦The research design describes


the general procedure in
conducting the study, including
ethical considerations.
Example:
◦ The research design used for this study is the Mixed
method using Descriptive design for Quantitative data,
and Thematic and Sentence analysis for qualitative
data.
◦ The research employed Non-probability sampling using-
Purposive/ Judgment technique. Participants of the
study were chosen based on the criteria: a) current MA
ESL, b) has at least 8 personal posts in FB for 8 months
and c) the post must be written in English
2. Population and Locale of the
study
◦Population of the study includes a
demographic background of the
prospective participants, how they will
be selected, and their number. It also
includes a description of the place
where the study will be conducted.
Example:
◦The study was conducted among thirteen MA
ESL students currently taking Second Language
Acquisition course in Benguet State University-
College of Arts and Sciences for SY 017-2018.
3. Data Gathering Procedure
◦The Data Gathering Procedure gives a
description on how data shall be collected.
Example, for qualitative studies—
observation, interview and the likes. For
quantitative, questionnaires, surveys, and
the likes. Further, the role of the researcher,
as well as who collected data have to be
described.
Example:
◦ To gather data needed for this study, the researchers sought
the approval of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences,
sent consent forms to the respondents, and afterwards,
downloaded their FB posts within the set timeline.
◦ To come up with the themes of the study, the following
procedures were made: a) FB posts of the participants were
thoroughly read by the researchers, b) meaning and topics
were internalized by the researchers through Hermeneutics and
Ethnomethodology; c) posts were categorized according to
topic and according to its relationship with one another; and
e) themes were formulated.
4. Data Collection Instruments
◦The Data Collection Instruments gives a
description of the instruments that will be
used to gather data. For quantitative
studies, a rationale for the use of these
measuring instruments should be included;
the reliability and validity of the instruments
should also be reported.
Example:
◦To obtain the needed information for the
study, the researchers prepared a checklist
containing sets of grammatical rules
(spelling, capitalizations, punctuations and
subject-verb-agreement) and a bank of
emoticons.
5. Treatment of Data
◦The Treatment of Data section describes
how the data will be analyzed.
Example:
◦For Quantitative, since you are on mathematical
formula, you describe the treatment of data on how
you solve the data:
◦A Likert-type scale will be used to describe changes in
levels of interest.
◦The weighted mean will be used to determine students’
change of level of interest. The t-test will be utilized to
compare changes in interest levels when students were
grouped according to the type of career path they
intended to follow.
