Major difference is that compressors handles the gases and pumps handles
the liquids.
As gases are compressible, the compressor also reduces the volume of gas.
Centrifugal pump
What are its applications?
Compressors have many everyday uses, such as in :
Refrigeration compressor
What are its various types?
Compressor classification can be described by following flow chart:
Dynamic compressors
The dynamic compressor is continuous flow compressor characterized by
rotating impeller to add velocity and thus pressure to fluid.
Dynamic compressors operate by continuously increasing the momentum
of a gas as it flows through them and do not rely on a trapped volume.
During dynamic compression, air is drawn between the blades on a rapidly
rotating compression impeller as it accelerates to a high velocity.
Subsequently, the gas is discharged through a diffuser, where the kinetic
energy is transformed into static pressure by gradually slowing (diffusing)
the gas velocity..
It is widely used in chemical and petroleum refinery industry for
specific services.
The gas next flows through a circular chamber (diffuser), where it loses
velocity and increases pressure.
Centrifugal compressors belong to the roto-dynamic type
of compressors.
In these compressors the required pressure rise takes
place due to the continuous conversion of angular
momentum.
Unlike reciprocating compressors, centrifugal compressors
are steady-flow devices hence they are subjected to less
vibration and noise.

Axial flow compressor
Working fluid principally flows parallel to the axis of rotation.
Intercooler
Positive displacement compressors
Positive displacement compressors causes movement by trapping a fixed
amount of air then forcing (displacing) that trapped volume into the discharge
pipe.

The valves employed in most air
compressors are designed to give
automatic action. They are of the spring-
loaded type operated by a small difference
in pressure across them, the light spring
pressure giving a rapid closing action.
