What is Plastic?
Plastic is a synthetic, semi-synthetic organic polymer.
“Plastic” means any item made out of poly propylene
(PP), non-woven poly propylene, multi layered co-
extruder poly propylene, poly ethylene (PE), poly vinyl
chloride (PVC), high and low density poly ethylene
(HDPE & LDPE), poly styrene(PS), which is also called
thermocol, poly amides (Nylon), poly terephthalate (PT),
poly methyl methacrylate (PMM) and plastic micro
beads. Most of the plastics are manufactured using
petrochemicals and natural resources.

Why is plastic bad?
Plastics are non-biodegradable. Because of this,
plastics remain in the environment for very long period
causing damage to the environment. Recycling of
plastics is very cost intensive and hence reducing the
use of plastics is highly essential for managing solid
waste.

What are the Impacts of Plastics on Environment?

• Plastic does not decompose/biodegrade easily and hence remains as
garbage for a long time polluting the land.

ºÉZÀÄÑ PÁ® PÀ¸ÀªÁV G½zÀÄ ¨sÀÆ

• Plastic when burnt releases cancerous furans and dioxins
which are harmful for the environment and pollutes the air we
breathe.

• During rainy season the plastic flows along with other
solid waste into the drains and chokes the drains. It
also flows into waterbodies such as rivers, lakes and
oceans causing pollution . Burnt plastic ash pollutes
the ground water as well.

• Animals like cows, dogs, pigs, birds etc., feeding on
garbage also eat plastics. Plastic gets inside the
alimentary canal of these animals creating problems
like choking, internal injuries etc., leading to their
death in extreme cases.

Harmful for health : DgÉÆÃUÀåPÉÌ ºÁ¤PÁgÀPÀ:
When plastic-laden trash is burnt, it releases
harmful furans and dioxins which are bad for health.
The discharge of plastic into rivers, lakes and oceans
pollutes water thereby affecting the aquatic flora and
fauna. The plastic containers in the solid waste act as
breeding ground for mosquito as they accumulate
water resulting in the spread of diseases.

Background:
Whereas, Plastic carry bags and other plastic items used
in daily life cause short term and long term environmental
damage and health hazard;
And whereas, Article 48-A of the Constitution of India,
inter alia, envisages that the state shall endeavor to
protect and improve the environment;
And whereas, it has come to the knowledge of the
Government that, the use of plastic carry bags, banners,
buntings, flex, plastic plates, plastic cups, plastic spoons,
cling films and plastic sheets used for spreading on dining
table and items that are made of thermocol are causing
serious environmental hazards and affects health of
human beings as well as animals;
And whereas, it is observed that the plastic wastes is also
causing blockage of gutters, sewers and drains apart from
resulting in pollution of water bodies in urban areas;

Government Initiatives ¸ÀPÁðgÀzÀ G¥ÀPÀæªÀÄUÀ¼ÀÄ
Due to the harmful effects of plastic, the Government of
Karnataka has taken a proactive step to ban the use of
Plastics in the State and make Karnataka a Plastic free
State. Karnataka State passed the state wide plastic ban
order on March 11, 2016: (Plastic Ban Notification)
under Section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act
1986 vide. Gazette Notification No. FEE 17 EPC 2012,
Bangalore dated 11.03.2016. It was published in the
Karnataka Gazette on the same date. Further awareness
is being created among the implementing officers of
Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike(BBMP), Urban
Local Bodies(ULB’s), Karnataka State Pollution Control
Board (KSPCB), Commercial Tax Department,
Department of Food and Civil Supplies, Legal Metrology
Department and Revenue Department through training
programmes, videoconferencing etc,.
