TEACHING LEARNING TO READ IN ENGLISH

alphabet, phonics and whole methods of
teaching word recognition. The technique
requires that the beginning reader should
have first the ff:
Mastery of the names and shapes of
the letters of the alphabet.

Adequate vocabulary so that the

words used in the Fuller lessons will
have meaning for him

The examples given should start

with a single consonant. ( S as in
snakes may not be good example
How to Use the Fuller

follows:
mslfthcrnbgdjwvzy
-Consonants k, x, and q are not taught in isolation.
- The regular sound of c ( k ) and g ( as in go ) are
taught .
> Introduce pictures that begin with the target sound (
vocabulary building )
> Focus the attention on the beginning sound of the
pictures.
> PRODUCE THE BEGINNING SOUND.
> Show the letter that represents the sound.
> Practice writing the letter (while sounding it) in
the air, on the floor, etc.
> Ask for other things/words that begin with the
same sound/ letter.
Lesson sequence #1:

a. Introduce a story, a poem, or a song

where most of the words start with a target
consonant (optional).
Note: remember that the learners are just learning the English
language. They may not be familiar with the words so
they will not understand the text.

Example: Lesson on Consonant Mm

Maria, the milkmaid, was going to the market
carrying a pail of milk on her head. As she went
along, she began pondering on what she would do
with the money she would get from selling the milk.
“I’ll buy some chicken from Mario,’ she said, and
they will lay eggs each morning which I will sell to
Mary.”
“With the money that I’ll get from the sale of these
eggs, I’ll buy myself a new Madonna dress and a hat,
and when I go to the market, all the people will look
at me.” as she was thinking about these, she turned
her head back and the pail fell off and all the milk
Moral Lesson:
spilt! Do not count your chicken before they are hatched.

story
talk about the letter or the sounds “Mm”

that start with the target letter (Mm)

places or things that begin with the MMM sound?
Note: If the learners give an examples in a

acknowledge it.

But ask them “ what do we call this in
