Rennaisance is a French

word meaning “rebirth”


which occurred between
1450 and 1600. Musician of
the renaissance period
worked in churches, courts
and towns. The polyphonic
church music was preferred
entirely by male choir. In the
renaissance period vocal
music was more important
than instrument music.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE RENAISSANCE MUSIC
1. The renaissance music is characterized by
clarity, balance, and euphony within
regulated limits.
2. Acapella singing which means music sung
without accompaniment is the ideal
medium especially in church.
3. The texture of Renaissance music was
vocal polyphony with four or more videos
of equal importance and high degree of
perfection

The invention of printing press by
Johannes Gutenberg started the
production of a printed bible and
music book.the impact of the
development of the printing press
in European culture was
profound and extensive and
books became both readily
available and affordable than
before.
PROTESTANT MUSIC
• The 16th century was marked by
unprecedented upheaval in the
Christian world. The protestant revolution
begun by Martin Luther had deep and
lasting effects. Luther publicly criticized
the church on corruption. Luther loved
music and believed in its ability to serve
religion. He encouraged the use of
polyphony in church services. He also
added congregational singing of hymns
or chorales some familiar tunes drawn
from Latin Church or popular song.
CATHOLIC TRANSFORMATION
• In 1536, Pope Paul III called for the
Ecumenical council, the Council of
Trent to discuss some reforms for the
Catholic Church. New devotional
musical genres arose in the wake of
Trent. Chanson is a French word which
means songs for several voices.
• Madrigal is a setting fro several voices
of several poetic text. The text usually
deals with sentimental love and
composers used verses by known
poets such as Tasso and Petrarch.
RENAISSANCE POLYPHONY
Renaissance polyphony is a style of music
characterized by the equal participation of voices
in exchange and imitation of motets and phrases.
Examples of Polyphony
Mass- is a musical setting of text that are common
in celebration of the mass.
Motet- was a relatively small-scale sacred text form
performed in polyphonic vocal setting during the
mass of a particular day.
KYRIE
• The kyrie is a six voice parts that constantly imitate each other
yet blend beautifully.

• Example:
Kyrie- Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christe eleison- Christ, have mercy upon us.
Kyrie eleison- Lord, have mercy upon us

The text is a short and words are repeated with ifferent melodic
lines to express calm supplication.
