Objectives
1. To deepen the knowledge of the audience about breastfeeding
2. To know the impotance of breastfeeding
Introduction
Breastfeeding is promoted by different health
organizations not just in the Philippines but all over the
world.
The Department of Health leads the advocacy on
breastfeeding and internationally it is advocated by the
World Health Organization.
There are certain laws that promotes breastfeeding.
Introduction
Breastfeeding is beneficial for both of the mother and
the infant.
Breastfeeding promotes healthy growth and
development of the baby.
Body
C. What are the benefits that mother can get from
breastfeed?
Breast milk provides optimal nutrition for babies. It has the
right amount of nutrients, is easily digested and readily
available. However, the rate of breastfeeding is as low as 30%
in some groups of women. While some women are unable to
breastfeed, others simply choose not to.
Body
1. Breastfeeding may help you to lose weight.
While some women seem to gain weight during
breastfeeding, others seem to effortlessly to lose weight.

2. Breastfeeding helps the uterus contract.

During pregnancy, the uterus grows immensely, expanding
from the size of a pear to filling almost the entire space of the
abdomen. After delivery, the uterus goes through a process called
involution, which helps it return to its previous size.
Body
3. Mothers who breastfeed have a lower risk of depression.
Postpartum depression is a type of depression that can develop
shortly after birth. Women who breastfeed seem less likely to develop
postpartum depression, compared to mothers who wean early or do
not breastfeed.

4. Breastfeeding reduces your disease risk.

Breastfeeding seems to provide the mother with long-term
protection against cancer and several diseases.
Body
5. Breastfeeding may prevent menstruation.
Continued breastfeeding also pauses ovulation and
menstruation. The suspension of menstrual cycles may actually be
nature’s way of ensuring there is some time between pregnancies.
6. It also saves time and money.
By choosing to breastfeed, you won’t have to:
• Spend money on formula
• Spend time cleaning and sterilizing bottles.
Body
D. What are the benefits that baby can get from breastfeed?
Breast milk is nature’s perfect baby food. It contains immunity-
boosting antibodies and healthy enzymes that scientists have yet to
replicate. Here are some advantages of breast milk for babies:
1. Protects against allergies and eczema
If there’s a history either in your family, it may be especially
beneficial for you to breastfeed. Proteins in cow’s milk and soy milk
formulas can stimulate an allergic reaction, while the proteins in hyman
breast milk are more easily digested.
Body
2. Causes less stomach upset, diarrhea, and constipation than formula
This is also because breast milk is so easy for your baby’s body to
break down.
3. Reduces the risk of viruses, urinary tract infections, inflammatory
bowel disease, gastroenteritis, ear infection, and respiratory infections.
4. Lessens the risk of SIDS.
Although the connection is unclear, breastfed infants account for
only half as many SIDS cases as formula-fed infants do/
Body
5. Makes vaccines more effective
Breastfed babies have a better antibody response to vaccines
than formula-fed babies.
6. Protects against diseases such as spinal meningitis, type 1 diabetes,
and Hodgkin’s lymphoma
7. May make your baby smarter
Breastfed babies having higher IQ scores later in life, even when
in taking socioeconomic factors into consideration.
8. Could help to prevent obesity
Body
9. Brings baby close to you
Bottlefed babies form bonds with their parents too, but the skin-
to-skin contact of breastfeeding is reassuring to a newborn.
Body
E. Advantages of breastfeeding
o Breastfeeding can lower illness in babies, such as
ear infections, allergies, respiratory issues, colds
and viruses, diabetes, insulin dependent diabetes,
a number of childhood cancers and ovarian cancer
and breast cancer.
o Breastfeeding also lowers your chance of getting
breast cancer.
Body
o breast milk is filled with antibodies that your
body’s immune system makes and then gets
passed through your milk on to your baby.
o It’s free! It’s always waiting for your baby.
o With breastfeeding, you do not have to wake up in
the middle of the night preparing bottles for baby.
You do not need to sterilize your nipples. You do
not have to put your nipples in the dishwasher
every night, and there are no special things that
you need to buy unless you plan on pumping for
your baby as well.
Body
o Nursing may also help you lose weight as you burn
around 500 calories or more each day while nursing.
Body
F. Why is breastfeeding more advisable than bottle
feeding?
Breastfeeding:
Breastfed babies have fewer infections and
hospitalizations than formula-fed infants. During
breastfeeding, antibodies and other germ-fighting factors
pass from a mother to her baby and strengthen the
immune system.
Body
This helps lower a baby's chances of getting many
infections, including:
• Ear infection
• diarrhea
• respiratory infections
• meningitis
Body
Breastfeeding also may protect babies against:
• allergies
• asthma
• diabetes
• obesity
• sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)
Body
Formula Feeding:
Commercially prepared infant formulas are a nutritious
alternative to breast milk, and even contain some vitamins and
nutrients that breastfed babies need to get from supplements.

o Lack of antibodies.
None of the antibodies found in breast milk are in
manufactured formula. So formula can't provide a baby with the
added protection against infection and illness that breast milk
does.
Body
o Can't match the complexity of breast milk.
Manufactured formulas have yet to duplicate the
complexity of breast milk, which changes as the baby's
needs change.
Body
Unlike breast milk — which is always available,
unlimited, and served at the right temperature — formula
feeding your baby requires planning and organization to make
sure that you have what you need when you need it. Parents
must buy formula and make sure it's always on hand to avoid
late-night runs to the store.
Body
And it's important to always have the necessary supplies
(like bottles and nipples) clean, easily accessible, and ready to go
— otherwise, you will have a very hungry, very fussy baby to
answer to. With 8-10 feedings in a 24-hour period, parents can
quickly get overwhelmed if they're not prepared and organized.
