The Sophist’s World
Was Rizal a Doctor?
May 3,1882- Jose Rizal secretly left the country aboard S.S Salvadora.


Paciano, two sisters, and few close friends knew his secret departure.

Why was it kept as a secret?

• To avoid detection by the Spanish authorities and friars.

• Rizal’s parents and Leonor knew nothing about this


either.
Jose Mercado
 Passport name used by Rizal in order to avoid interrogation by
the Spaniards.


 Name of his cousin in Biñan.

 When he reached Barcelona, Spain he came into contact with


Filipinos who were plotting revolution.

 Not one of the desperate plans he heard appealed him as


having any hope of success.
 He had definite mind, set in favor of education and
against revolution at this period and during all his
life.

 Barcelona left him surer than ever that, as he had


written six years before education must give his

country light before he could hope for more
freedom.

 November 3,1882 from Barcelona Rizal went to


Madrid and enrolled in two courses- Medicine and
Philosophy and Letters at the Universidad Central
de Madrid.
 Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando-Rizal studied
painting and sculpture.

 He also found time to study French, German, and


English under private instructors.

-Rizal varied education helped him assimilate all this
influences into his nationalistic thoughts and writings.
THE DIARIONG TAGALOG
• August 1, 1882 the Diariong Tagalog was founded.

• Marcelo H. del Pilar-founder of Diariong Tagalog.


• Francisco Calvo- editor of Diariong Tagalog; member of
editorial staff.

• The first bilingual newspaper.

• This paper published nationalist and reformist articles.

• Because of lack of funds, the paper ceased publication on


October 31,1882.
Articles in Diariong Tagalog
“El Amor Patrio” (The Love of Country)
-this
was the first articles Rizal wrote in the
Spanish soil.


-he used the pen name “Laong Laan “ (ever
prepared) as a byline for this articles and
he sent it to Marcelo H. Del Pilar for tagalog
translation.

-the article aimed to establish nationalism


and patriotism among the natives.
“Revista De Madrid” (Review of Madrid)

-this articles written by Rizal on November 29,1882 was


unfortunately returned to him because Diariong


Tagalog had ceased publication for lack of funds.
“Los Viajes” (Travels)
-published in the La Solidaridad on May 15, 1889 this
articles tacled the rewards gained by the people who
are well-traveled to many places in the world.
