National iodine deficiency

disorder programme
• Govt. of india has aimed to reduce
prevalence of goitre under the programme
of 'health for all by 2000' as a result a
major national programme was mounted in
1986 with the objective to replace the
entire edible salt by iodine salt.
• National goitre control programme was
launched or initiated by Govt. of India in
1962.
aim
• To correct iodine deficiency through salt
iodization. banning of entry of common
salt.
• To implement universalization of iodized
salt. production of salt is liberalized by
inviting and heavily subsidizing to private
salt manufacture.
• This programme aims at controllinng
endemic goitrein the Himalayan region.
objectives
• Reduction of 50% of cases by 1985 95%
by 2000 AD.
• The goal of IDD control programme in
India was to reduce the prevalence of IDD
below 10% in the country by 2012

• to identify and assess the prevalence of
goitre in suspected area through systemic
survey.
• to prevent and control goitrethrough
production and supply of iodized salt in
place common salt in endemic areas.
• to assess the impact of the programmes
by undertaking reservey of the area after 5
years of supplying iodized salt.
• one method of increasimng iodine intake is
by adding iodine to common salt.

iodine intake.
achievements
• the recent coverage population servey has
reported 91% population been cover with
iodized salt.
• while 71% population is consuming
adequately iodized salt and another 20%
is consuming salt with some added iodine
